Settling - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Settling is sediment that has settled at the bottom of a liquid.
Settling velocity or fall velocity or terminal velocity (ws) of a (sediment) particle is the rate at which the sediment settles in still fluid.
where w is the settling velocity, ρ is density (the subscripts p and f indicate particle and fluid respectively), g is the acceleration due to gravity, r is the radius of the particle and μ is the dynamic viscosity of the fluid.

Settling basins for open feedlots - Odor and Nutrient Management Newsletter
Basins must be designed to settle solids from runoff from a 1-hour, 10-year storm (approximately 2.5 inches per hour).
Settling basins must have 1 square foot of surface area for every 8 cubic feet of runoff per hour from the feedlot.
Basin surface area should be at least 1/40th of the drainage area.

Settling may remove 35 percent to 60 percent of the solids from dairy slurry, with as little as 10 minutes detention time (30 to 60 minutes detention time is common).
Settling basins may be used to reduce the nutrient-loading on a lagoon from a gutter-flushing system, but are used more commonly to reduce the nutrient-loading on a vegetative filter strip from lot runoff.
Adding a settling basin to remove a portion of the solids may decrease the required lagoon volume for a new facility, or it may let you increase the animal units served by an existing lagoon.

To prevent scouring of the settled solids from the settling basin, the liquid cross-sectional area should be about 5 percent of the ponded surface area.

Settling basins are designed to slow down runoff enough to settle solids from the hardest one-hour storm expected every 10 years.
Purdue University research indicates 60% to 75% of manure solids settle out of runoff in a settling basin, and about 50% of the nitrogen is left in the settling basin.
Earthen settling basins cost $3/head to $10/head, but are more difficult to clean and don’t have a solid bottom, so they never completely dry out.

 Chapter 9. OPTIMISATION AND UPGRADING OF A PLANT FROM 1 m3 s-1 TO 2.5 m3 s-1
Distribution of flocculated water across the settling basins was rather poor and thus a new permeable baffle had to be installed at the entrance to each basin.
Settled water passed from each basin over a weir that was the width of the basin at the outlet end.
The main concern was to obtain equal flow distribution among the three flocculation basins, which was governed by the square of the ratio of the conduit velocity to the lateral velocity (Figure 8.5 shows distribution to three settling basins).

The settling velocity of the floc to be removed was 2.75 cm per min and, because it has at most 15 cm to fall, 5.45 minutes (15 cm/2.75 cm per min) had to be allowed within the apparatus.
Floc settles out on the plates and slides down their inclined surfaces to the bottom or to the 0.20 m corridor and accumulates in the basin bottom beneath the plates, where a hydraulic system is constructed for periodic sludge removal.

Heretofore most settling basins are filled constantly and spill over an outlet weir at the far discharge end and when the basin is full of solids to a pre-determined depth, the liquid is drawn off and the solids removed and the process continued.
Improvements in settling basin technology and the impact of environmental considerations have led to development of new processes whereby the basin will be filled, held for settling, sampled at various depths, and then emptied from the top down so as to hold most of the suspended solids in check.
As a result of this new approach to the treatment of fluids in settling basins, the need has arisen for a different type of sampling device, namely a device which is capable of sampling the fluid at varying depths from its surface to the bottom of the basin.

As is described in the course notes on Theoretical Settling Basin Design, for any given flow the surface area will determine the critical settling velocity and thus the effectiveness of the settling basin.
Since basins also have to have the accumulated solids cleaned out, the usual minimum settling basin width is the width of the farmers scraper or loader bucket.
This is not always a practical length, and for settling basins that treat runoff from a large feedlot or watershed it would lead to ridiculously wide settling basins.
