Seung Sahn Soen-sa (1927-2004) was the 78th Patriarch of Korean Zen (or Korean Sŏn) Buddhism.
In 1948, Seung Sahn retired from secular life, taking vows and ordaining as a Buddhist monk.
On November 30th, at the age of 77 and surrounded by his students, Seung Sahn Soen sa died at Hwa Gye Sah temple in Seoul, South Korea.

The Zen Master Seung Sahn has been largely accredited with introducing Korean Zen to the West, and for this reason has been referred to as the "Korean Bodhidharma" in his homeland.
In the course of the next ten years, Sahn was a captain in the army (he was drafted when the Korean War broke out), an abbot of a temple outside of Seoul, and the founder of the United Buddhism Association (a lay community).
Sahn passed on the Inka seal to several of his American students, enabling them to teach and spread the practice themselves.

I did meet one extraordinary monk, Seung Sahn-Nim (No relation to my Seung Sahn Soen Sa), who was the abbott of a small temple in Seoul.
