Seva is a cornerstone of the Sikh religion.
With sites in India, Cambodia, Nepal, Tibet, China and Mexico, the Seva Foundation has helped restore sight to millions by helping to develop cheap and effective cataract surgery.
The foundation is famous for its benefit concerts, which are hosted by the "voice of Woodstock," famed hippy-clown and living Ben and Jerry's ice cream flavor Wavy Gravy.

The Seva Foundation is a non-profit foundation, founded in December, 1978, whose goal is to build partnerships to respond to "locally defined problems with culturally sustainable solutions throughout the world." In Sanskrit seva means "selfless service".
Seva has various missions to respond to these 'local problems', from sight saving and restoring projects in Nepal, India, Tibet, Cambodia and Tanzania, to community self-development projects in Chiapas and Guatemala, to diabetes prevention programs and grants for indigenous peoples of North America.
Baba Ram Dass, a founding board member, spiritual teacher and advisor, and champion of Seva was honored in the DVD Fierce Grace in which Ram Dass talks about the founding of Seva by Larry Brilliant and Girija Brilliant, a devoted group of doctors, social workers, activists, and at least one clown.

Seva through the mental faculties (man) lies in contributing one's talents - creative, communicative, managerial, etc. - to the corporate welfare of the community and mankind in general.
Seva must be so carried out as to dissolve the ego and lead to self-transcendence, which is the ability to acknowledge and respond to that which is other than the self.
True seva according to Sikh scriptures must be without desire (nishkam), in humility (nimarta), with purity of intention (hirda suddh), with sincerity (chit lae) and in utter selflessness (vichon aap gavae).

Seva finds its fullest expression in the formation of the All India Anti Untouchability League, founded on October 26, 1932 by caste Hindus under the chairmanship of Madan Mohan Malaviya; G D Birla became the president and A V Thakkar the secretary.
This operational concept of seva was an integral elaboration of the thought of an upper-caste as it learnt to become an elite overcoming the challenges to its hegemony from different directions.

An Amritdhari Sikh woman who also experienced this discrimination and watched non-Sikh men carrying the palki stated that her concern was not that non-Sikhs should not be allowed to do the seva, but that women should be allowed to do the same.
She expressed that seva should be open to anyone who desired to do it.
