Vicksburg Campaign - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Vicksburg Campaign was a series of battles and maneuvers in the American Civil War directed against Vicksburg, Mississippi, a fortress city that dominated the last Confederate-controlled section of the Mississippi River.
The Louisiana land west of Vicksburg was also difficult, riven with streams and poor country roads, and on the wrong side of the river from the fortress.
They shelled Vicksburg throughout July and fought some minor battles with a few Confederate vessels in the area, but their forces were insufficient to attempt a landing and they abandoned attempts to force the surrender of the city.
