Although the 106 ft (32 m) high Prado Dam -- intended to control flooding along the river -- was completed three years after the 1938 disaster, the structure's presence has not eliminated concerns that the county could once again suffer the effects of a severe flood.
In its present form Prado Dam is designed to protect against a 70-year flood, that is, a flood with a magnitude expected to occur on average once every 70 years.
At the same time, the dam's crest will be lengthened from 2,280 to 3,050 ft (695 to 930 m), and its outlet capacity will increase from 9,000 to 30,000 cfs (255 to 850 m3/s).

Once the grate is clogged (as shown at right from the most recent flooding), the lake can rise and breach the dam in as little as 20 minutes due to the large amount of water that passes through the lake during heavy rains.

The fire appears to be continuing east pretty much unchecked towards the Seven Oaks Dam and the Santa Ana River canyon.
If someone had told me that the entire southern face of our mountains from the Seven Oaks Dam northwest of Redlands all the way 45 miles west to Claremont would burn in one massive conflagration in a matter of three or four days I’d have said you’re crazy no way that could ever happen.
Seven Oaks is just north of the 38 east of Angelus Oaks and should not be confused with Seven oaks Dam.

Dam supporters want to keep the river flowing through the tunnel to prevent "the river-loving public from growing accustomed to rafting this stretch of river and thus intensifying the anti-dam constituency." Rafting enthusiasts and environmental groups have the opposite political motives.
The 550-foot-high dam near Redlands was built by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, intending to protect downriver residents against the 100-year flood and was supposed to be operating by now.
The Oak Street Dam in Baraboo is scheduled for removal in January 2000, the LaValle Dam is to be removed in 2001, and the Linen Mills Dam in Baraboo, known locally as the Glenville Dam, is scheduled to be removed in 2003 at the latest.
