Edoras is the chief city of Rohan, situated at the feet of the White Mountains near the river Snowbourne.
Sindarin for 'Citadel-of the-Stars', it is the once capital and chief city of Gondor, until it was superseded by the fortress-city of Minas Tirith.
It lay in the narrow lands between the Mountains of Shadow and the Great River, bordered by the marshland of Nindalf in the north and the river Poros in the south.

Such examples of its use by Tolkien are: the seven Rings of the Dwarf Lords, the seven rivers of Ossiriand, the seven sons of Feanor and the seven gates of Gondolin, the seven tiers of Minas Tirith (which presumably had seven gates).
The positions of the various sides are also close with the fortress of the dark in the East and most of the light ruling in the West with the exception of Minas Tirith.
However, even Gondor and Rohan indirectly fell under the influence of the Dark Lord and were slowly being corrupted during the War of the Ring.
