The first sod of this colliery was cut on Monday, March 11th 1872, by Miss Isobella Bevan the daughter of David Bevan of Evans and Bevan the mine owning partners.
Also present at the ceremony were David Bevan's other six sisters, hence the name of the colliery and the village.
