For their third and final attempt on Mt. Everest, Wells had to choose between the summit try and his family; Bass completed the seventh summit to become the oldest man to stand on top of the world.
"Seven Summits" is for the most part an entertaining read, though anyone who isn't wealthy enough to follow in Dick and Frank's footsteps will probably have difficulty truly rooting for them in their quest.
First, climbing the seven summits (the tallest mountains on each continent) is by the standards of true mountaineers not a terribly impressive feat.

He hired professional climbers to help him reach Everest, by far the most difficult of his Seven, completed his Everest summit April 30, 1985, and then co-authored the book, describing the undertaking.
As of 2003, somewhat more than 100 climbers have climbed all seven of the peaks on one or the other of those two lists; about 40% of those have climbed all of the eight peaks required to complete both lists.
Many mountain climbers, beyond these hundred and some, aspire to complete the seven ascents of one or both of these lists, but the expense, physical ability, and danger involved often turn out to be far beyond the resources they can bring to the project.

The "Seven Summits" is the name given to highest points of the seven continents of the world.
Puncack Jaya (Carstenz Pyramid) on the island of New Guinea is clearly a dominant summit in the world hierarchy--it is the highest point between the high peaks of Central Asia and the Andes, and the highest peak on an island in the world.
There are two main issue with calling it one of the seven summits: First, it is hard to call it a continental high point when it is not on a continental landmass, and second, politically it is in Indonesia, part of Asia.
