Alpha, the sixth and newest album from Sevendust, marks a return to the band's origins and a welcome sonic assault to their legions of followers.
Crammed into the same rehearsal/writing room which spawned their ground-breaking 1997 debut, Sevendust found themselves right where it all started in their hometown of Atlanta, Georgia.
From the blood-curdling vocal introduction of the first track, Deathstar, the listener knows it's old school Sevendust on a collision course with a fresh burning desire to obliterate, even if the victim may come from within.

Sevendust did its part in creating a template for that "dark ages" for alternative, or in the half full analogy, glory days for meat heads and Ozzfest patrons.
It's unfair to lump Sevendust into this context because they truly were trailblazers at a time when society was willing to accept them to their ears.
Plus, Sevendust had a melody none of the copycats would successfully imitate, resonating most in songs like "Black" and "Bitch," their two early hits, plus "Denial." The depressing lyrics were offset by the harmonious lilt of singer Lajon Witherspoon and added depth and feeling that otherwise would be lost in the riff heavy rock.

Of all of the metal bands that hit the scene during the late 1990’s, Sevendust is one of my personal favorites.
Sevendust’s take on the Marvin Gaye classic “Inner City Blues” was originally found on the bonus DVD from their album Seasons, while their previously unreleased twist on Alice Cooper’s classic summer anthem “School’s Out” may turn a few heads and was apparently a remake recorded during the sessions of their self-titled debut release in 1997.
I actually own everything Sevendust has released to this point (on CD and DVD) and I would suggest checking out the individual albums instead of this.

Be advised that the band Sevendust is, by any reckoning, extremely "postmodern"; and furthermore, that their sound can only be described as a "pastiche" of influences and genres.
This is the effect Sevendust were after when they sought out Toby Wright to produce their sophomore effort – the balance between raw power and melodic delicacy which Wright previously helped Alice in Chains to find.
Unlike most bands, all five members of Sevendust are involved in every stage of songwriting, a practice evident from the salad bar of stylistic elements audible on this album – R&B, industrial, electronica, even hip-hop.

When Sevendust released their third album, 2001's Animosity in late 2001, it took me a good three months to pick it up.
That being said, I still think this disc is better than their self titled debut, which despite being granted "nu-metal classic" status by many rock fans, is nothing more than 1 classic track wrapped around some other decent songs and a whole lot of filler.
The first single, Praise, is a solid rocker in it's own right, with one of the better riffs that Sevendust has written thus far, and the dueling vocals between Witherspoon and drummer Morgan Rose bring the last tad of intensity that this song needed to make it truly worthwhile.
