Bangladesh elects on national level a head of state - the president - and a legislature.
Bangladesh has a unofficial two-party system, which means that there are two dominant political parties, with extreme difficulty for anybody to achieve electoral success under the banner of any other party.

The eight parliamentary elections on 1 October 2001 were by many seen as an important test of Bangladesh’s commitment to democracy as well as of the political and public resolve to maintain the tradition of parliamentary governance restored in 1991 and further consolidated in 1996.
At the dawn of the new millennium, Bangladesh was again faced with a political crisis as the two major parties failed to settle their differences through dialogue and negotiations and resorted to the tactics of agitation politics of the street.
The Bangladesh Election Commission (BEC) is an independent institution whose primary roles are to: 1) hold elections of members of Parliament, 2) hold elections for the office of the President 3) prepare the registry of eligible voters for general elections, and 4) define the constituencies for Parliamentary elections.

Decreed that parliamentary elections should be held in May or June 1999, that all parties meeting the legal requirements would be able to compete, and that appointed military representation in legislative bodies should gradually be reduced in accordance with a law to be enacted later.
In previous elections it was widely known that government employees and their families were expected to, and did, vote for and in many cases worked on behalf of Golkar.
Elections in 1999 will for the first time be held on a holiday to avoid workplace pressure and the possibility, as has happened in the past, that supervisors will know how their employees voted and take punitive action against them.

The supreme command of the defence services of Bangladesh shall vest in the President and the exercise thereof shall be regulated by law (27) (c) and such law shall, during the period in which there is a Non-Party Care-taker Government under article 58B, be administered by the President.
If after a dissolution and before the holding of the next general election of members of Parliament the President is satisfied that owing to the existence of a state of war in which he Republic is engaged it is necessary to recall Parliament, the President shall summon the Parliament that has been dissolved to meet.
A general election of members of Parliament shall be held within ninety days after Parliament is dissolved, whether by reason of the expiration of its term or otherwise than by reason of such expiration.

Sheikh Mujibur Rahman declared immediately after the elections that he would take into account West Pakistani views while writing the new constitution, but that the fundamentals of the constitution would have to be secular and confederal, in accordance with the Awami League’s manifesto, which also called for changing the name of East Pakistan to Bangladesh.
Admiral Ahsan (the military governor who conducted the elections and resigned on the eve of military action) admitted to U.S. officials later that “[p]rior to March at least, separation was not Mujib’s intention” and “India’s position has despite public outcry been relatively moderate and its hands before the events in March were relatively clean.

I hear that he stood in the Brent East by-election and having received only 11 votes declared that all those who hadn’t voted at all had in fact cast their vote for him.
The widely-held view on the Brent East by-election result was that it was lost by Labour because of the war on Iraq and this may well be accurate.
But I knocked on plenty of doors where people had decided to stay at home on election day because the park down the road was subject to vandalism and no longer a safe place for their children to play.

The last presidential election was held in September 2005, in which Mubarak won again.
However, after the September elections there has been expressed concern from international human rights observers concerning freedom of speech, government interference in local elections and vote-rigging.
Newspapers however have exhibited an increasing freedom in criticizing the president, and the results of the parlimentary elections genuinely indicate that a democratic transition is underway, as evidenced by the strong showing of rival political parties.
