In a March 1835 revelation the role of the Seventy was further clarified: "The Seventy are also called to preach the gospel, and to be especial witnesses unto the Gentiles and in all the world—thus differing from other officers in the church in the duties of their calling" (DandC 107:25).
On October 3, 1975, the First Quorum of the Seventy was reconstituted as an entity, and on October 1, 1976, the members of the First Council of the Seventy and the Assistants to the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles were released and added to the First Quorum of the Seventy.
The quorums of Seventy consist of general Church officers, ordained to the Melchizedek Priesthood office of seventy, who, under the direction of the First Presidency and the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, carry major responsibility for administering the affairs of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints throughout the world.

In current Church policy, men called to the Quorums of the Seventy keep the designation "Elder", although they hold the office of high priest in the Melchizedek Priesthood, and typically remain general authorities until they die, but are granted emeritus status at the age of 70.

The dictionary definition of the word Apostle, as one who is sent; does not adequately encompass or describe the Apostles of Jesus Christ called by the will of God and separated unto the Gospel.
