Euphonium - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
They are chiefly known now through their mention in the song "Seventy-six Trombones" from the musical The Music Man by Meredith Willson.
The euphonium's fundamental pitch is concert B-flat (Bb); in the United States, music for the instrument is usually written in the bass clef without transposition, though treble-clef euphonium parts, transposing down a major ninth, are commonly found in concert band music for the sake of students who have recently switched from the trumpet.
The so-called American-style euphonium, featuring three valves on the front of the instrument and a curved forward-pointing bell, was predominant in American school bands throughout most of the twentieth century and was almost universally labeled a "baritone" by both band directors and composers; this is probably responsible for much of the baritone/euphonium confusion.

 CityBeat: Think System (2002-06-27)
Meredith Willson's 1957 classic show, The Music Man, is packed with great tunes -- "Seventy Six Trombones," "Till There Was You" -- and it tells a clever story of a traveling salesman who bamboozles a tiny Iowa town into thinking its kids can become a razzle-dazzle marching band if he sells them instruments and uniforms.
As music teacher Marian Paroo, Carolann M. Sanita has a lovely voice and renders her songs beautifully, but she seems infected by Vandermeer's diminishing energy so her acquiescence to Harold Hill's wiles is merely perfunctory.
My theory: The producers were hoodwinked by the "think system." They put hardworking (but wholly inexperienced) talent onstage and asked them to think hard about the vibrant show audiences loved on Broadway.

 The Music Man
Harold Hill demands the attention of the audience and starts once again to expound his ideas about a boys' band until the kids become infected with his enthusiasm ("Seventy-Six Trombones").
Indeed, now that Harold has, indeed, delivered the instruments and the uniforms without absconding with the money she is much more sympathetic to him; and there is no question in her mind that he is a man of considerable charm.
Undaunted, Harold Hill proceeds to arouse the town's enthusiasm for starting a boys' band by pointing out the corrupt influence on their children of the local pool parlour ("Trouble").
