Severe Tire Damage is They Might Be Giants' first live album, and it's about time they had one.
Severe Tire Damage also includes three new studio tracks: "Doctor Worm" is standard fare for the band-- its marching chorus is simple but clever and the horn section's also a nice touch.
"Severe Tire Damage Theme" is a bizarre 40- second- long instrumental that sounds like the soundtrack to an old German variety show.

True, any live album of theirs culled from the 1980s or early 90s would have been EXTREMELY pointless: the band was a two-piece and relied on tapes for most of their backing music.
But it robs this album of some value, seeing as they already had a full band for that album so the versions here aren't particularly unique from their originals.
Great for when you get tired of the albums and want to hear the classic tunes with a twist, and further evidence that They Might Be Giants did not lose relevence when they signed to a major label and ceased being a two-piece.

"Severe Tire Damage Theme" is a kooky instrumental, while "About Me" is a short torchy number that wouldn't have sounded out of place on their self-titled debut.
Then there's the album's climax: tracks 18-24 were created spontaneously live on stage, and comprise a rock opera based on the Planet of the Apes films (that sound you just heard was Ink Nineteen's Features Editor, David Lee Beowulf, yelping in astonishment).

Over the course of two albums and three singles, Belle and Sebastian's Stewart Murdoch has shown himself to be one of the most capable song and lyric-writers of his generation.
His one song on this album, "A Space Boy Dream" is a variant on the B-side of that single, a drum and bass groove, with a narrative about a dreamed childhood visit to Mars.
On this album, however, Isobel's lovely, lilting vocals (with Murdoch's playing second fiddle) distinguish the song from the rest of the album well enough to make it, along with Murdoch and David's compositions, one of this year's musical highpoints.
