What is a Severe Thunderstorm Warning?   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
In order to understand what a severe thunderstorm warning is, it is helpful to know what a severe thunderstorm is. A severe thunderstorm is defined by the National Weather Service as having wind speeds of over 57 mph (98 km) and/or producing quarter-inch (.63 cm) size hail.
These thunderstorms are usually part of a line of severe weather, and may be individual "supercells" or a long line of storms.
A severe thunderstorm warning means that a severe thunderstorm is moving into a particular area.

 American Red Cross- Thunderstorms
The typical thunderstorm is 15 miles in diameter and lasts an average of 20 to 30 minutes.
When a severe thunderstorm WARNING is issued, review what actions to take under a tornado warning or a flash flood warning.
For example, a severe thunderstorm watch means that a severe thunderstorm is expected in the next six hours or so within an area approximately 120 to 150 miles wide and 300 to 400 miles long (36,000 to 60,000 square miles).

Severe thunderstorms are likely to produce large hailstones and damaging winds in the warning area over the next several hours.
Severe thunderstorms are forecast to affect Swansea, Lake Macquarie, Berowra, Brooklyn, Dee Why and Palm Beach by 12:45 PM and Belmont, Charlestown, Newcastle City, Wallsend, Woy Woy and Terrigal by 1:15 PM.

A severe thunderstorm can be damaging and life threatening, death and injuries occasionally occur from strong winds.

Severe thunderstorm watch - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A severe thunderstorm watch (code: WS; sometimes referred to as "blue box" by meteorologists and storm chasers) is issued when weather conditions are favorable for the development of severe thunderstorms.
If the thunderstorms are forecasted to be so severe that they may produce tornadoes, then a tornado watch (which also automatically implies a severe thunderstorm watch) is issued.
This is rare with severe thunderstorm watches (since the tornado threat has to remain low enough to only warrant a severe thunderstorm watch); it is far more common with tornado watches.

 TECHNIQUES FOR ISSUING SEVERE THUNDERSTORM
Generally the tornadoes that occur with multicell (or ordinary cell) thunderstorms are not as severe as the tornadoes that occur with the supercell thunderstorm.
The familiar radar reflectivity signature commonly referred to as the "hook echo" is shown to be at the confluence of the thunderstorm updraft with the rear flank downdraft, and is the preferred region for strong tornado occurrence.
Severe weather with LP supercells is limited to large hail and an occasional weak to moderate tornado.

Prior to the development of a thunderstorm, the air near the surface is often warm and moist.
In the Severe thunderstorm the updrafts and downdrafts are separate from one another, This allows the storm to last longer and severe weather may develop.

Bureau of Meteorology: Severe Thunderstorm Warnings
A Severe Thunderstorm Warning is issued when a severe thunderstorm is reported, or there is strong evidence of a severe thunderstorm, and it is expected to persist
The exact location of severe thunderstorms can be hard to predict.  The warnings are usually issued without much lead-time before the event.  To try and issue warnings with a greater lead-time would lead to a flood of false alarms, thus rendering the service ineffective.
Severe Thunderstorm Warnings are issued by Regional Offices of the Bureau of Meteorology in the capital city of the affected State/Territory, with the exception that warnings for the ACT are issued from Sydney.
