  Maryland - MSN Encarta
Maryland is bordered by Pennsylvania on the north, Delaware and the Atlantic Ocean on the east, Virginia on the south, and West Virginia on the southwest and west.
Maryland’s natural regions are, from east to west, the Atlantic Coastal Plain, the Piedmont, the Blue Ridge province, the Ridge and Valley province, and the Appalachian Plateaus (locally called the Allegheny Plateau).
The region in Maryland is primarily one of farmlands and small rural communities, except for the urbanized areas centered on Baltimore and Washington, D.C., in the west, and Salisbury and Ocean City in the east.

 Colonial Maryland
With the founding of Maryland came the first permanent proprietary government of America, that is, a government by a lord proprietor, who, holding his authoriity by virtue of a royal charter, nevertheless exercised that authority almost as an independent sovereign.
Aside from the fact that Maryland was the first of the proprietary governments, the colony is especially remembered in American history as the first in which religious toleration had a place.
Maryland was singularly free from Indian massacres as also for many years from maladministration; but there was one source of constant irritation that annoyed the colony for a generation, and that was the jealousy of the Virginians.

The Severn watershed covers an 81 square mile area, which is tiny compared to the 67,000 square mile area of the Chesapeake as a whole or the 27,000 of the Susquehanna.
The Severn watershed extends in a northwest direction more than 7 miles from tidewater, nearly to the BWI parkway, although it is entirely in the coastal plain.
On the south side of the Severn the watershed is fairly broad, with some of the branches nearly a mile long.

 Magothy River Association
This is in contrast to the Severn River just south of us, where new beds and expansion of existing beds have occurred since SAV was mapped there in 1994.
One unavoidable difference between the two rivers is that the mouth of the Magothy is much closer to the Susquehanna than the mouth of the Severn, and the Susquehanna is the source of much of the nutrients and sediment entering the Bay.
Maryland DNR biologists are currently scanning those old photos and trying to map the SAV on them; we should have results later this year.
