Severn Trent Water is one of the ten privatised water companies in England.
It supplies fresh water and treats sewage for around 8 million people in the Midlands of England and also certain regions of Wales.
Like other water companies in England, Severn Trent Water are regulated by Ofwat, the Office of the Water Regulator.

STW's director of asset management, John Banyard, comments, "When we first looked at this project, I have to admit that I was concerned by the complexity of what we were attempting to do; after all there are few utilities that cover 8,000 square miles with 32,000 miles of water main and 30,000 miles of sewer.
For STW, the UADMS project is the final step in a transformation that began in 1974, when the British government formed it by combining 242 separate water and wastewater undertakings, each with its own records system.

In July 2003 Severn Trent changed the way in which it collected data on water consumption by its customers, which resulted in higher leakage than previously reported.
Ofwat's new leakage targets for Severn Trent aim to reverse the rise in leakage by the end of March 2005, and ensure that the company achieves its revised economic level of leakage as soon as possible.
The independent reporter also found that while Severn Trent had good systems in place for monitoring leakage on the local distribution network, the company's ability to measure losses from trunk mains and service reservoirs needed improvement.

Balfour Beatty, the international engineering, construction and services group, announces today that its subsidiary, Balfour Beatty Utilities, has been appointed by Severn Trent Water to play a key role in delivering its AMP 4 capital expenditure programme in a contract likely to be worth approximately £60 million.
The contract, which will run for five years, is for the delivery of part of Severn Trent’s clean water infrastructure capital expenditure programme.
The company was formed in late 2002 by the integration of Kennedy and Kentons, established utilities contractors acquired by Balfour Beatty in 2001 and 2002 respectively.

Nov. 29--Severn Trent has given the strongest indication yet that it may attempt to overturn Ofwat's ruling, due on Thursday, on household water bills in the Midlands for the next five years, writes Robert Lea.
Its customers are in for rises of up to 24 percent, according to the water regulator's indicative ruling on price caps.
But Severn is warning that may not be enough to cope with the big changes needed in expenditure to upgrade water mains, prevent sewer flooding and put in place environmental changes demanded by Brussels.
