  The Severn Tunnel
This railway, with its ferry piers, was the forerunner of the Severn Tunnel.
The tunnel was designed to have a depth sufficient to enable the building of a roof 30 ft. thick (subsequently increased to 50 ft. between the top of the arch and the lowest part of the river bottom).
Since the tunnel was designed to carry two lines of track, the width was fixed at 26 ft. The semicircular arch of 13 ft. radius was to spring from side walls 7 ft. above rail level, and the depth between rail level and the tunnel invert was to be 4 ft. 6 in.

It diverges from the main line at Wootton Bassett near Swindon, first calling at Bristol Parkway, after which the line continues through the Severn Tunnel into South Wales.
In 1886, the opening of the Severn Tunnel brought the opportunity of a more direct route to South Wales, and trains from Swindon to Newport and beyond were routed via Bristol and the Severn Tunnel.
This involved the construction of about 33 miles of new track including two tunnels at Alderton and Sodbury between Wootton Bassett and Patchway.
