Sex   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-08-08)
In mammals, birds, and many other species, sex is determined by the sex chromosomes, called X and Y in mammals, and Z and W in birds.
Sex in humans is a unitary concept and identity for most social purposes: we are male or female.
It shows the man with broader shoulders (sex dimorphism) and the woman in clothing that is in the western world rarely worn by men, a dress (which functions as a gender signal).

 Sex
In some cases, individuals have had, e.g., a chromosomal sex of XY but primary sexual characteristics (external genitalia, etc.) of females, and have been raised as females, only to have been discovered in adulthood to be genetically male.
Despite the fact that these individuals had an underlying biological sex that was of one kind, and an apparent sex that was its opposite, in many cases the individuals as well as members of their families and communities accepted their incorrect sex determination.
Many social scientists use "sex" to refer to the biological division into male and female, and "gender" to refer to gender roles assigned to people on the basis of their apparent sex and/or other contingent factors.

Typically, a species will have two sexes: male and female The female sex is defined as the one that produces the larger gamete (i.e., reproductive cell). The categories of sex are, therefore, descriptive of the reproductive functions that an individual is capable of performing at sometime in its life cycle.
In other species, including crocodiles, and most insects, sex may be determined by various other sex-determination system s, including those controlled by environmental factors such as temperature.
However, for these people the relationships between biolological factors (such as hormones) and environmental factors and the psychosocial levels of sexual identity such as gender identity and sexual orientation have proven to be complex, with plenty of exceptions to proposed theoretical systems.

Sex remains an important contributor to quality of life in many patients with chronic illness and their partners.
In a life restricted by illness, sex can be a powerful source of comfort, pleasure and intimacy, and an affirmation of gender when other gender roles have been stripped away.
Sexual desire, capacity and activity may be altered by illness through interference with the hormonal, vascular and neural integrity of the genitalia, as well as the effects and side effects of medications.

On Sex, Love and Mental Illness Elliot Lazerwitz It is told in the Old Testament that Abraham and Sarah married young and vital.
Eventually a son was born, Isaac — in Hebrew, "Yitzchak," meaning "he will laugh." Whether or not you are a believer, if you suffer from some brand of serious mental illness, and you are what is known as a "consumer" or "survivor" (or "c/s"), you may face a journey as long and discouraging as Sarah's.
I am dead serious -- about how the effects of mental illness and poverty, as well as clumsy social skills that you may have to painfully relearn, can stigmatize and mark the recovering c/s in a manner severely limiting most social interaction with the rest of the world.

Functional limitations scores based on a Rasch measurement model of 20 Health Assessment Questionnaire items were analyzed in mixed-effects models to estimate the rate of change in functional ability as a function of age, duration of illness, sex, and interactions.
Sex was significant in both models and no interactions were significant in either model.
Limitation in functional ability in RA progressed in a linear manner with duration of illness and progressed at the same rate for both men and women, but functional limitations were greater for women.

The measures of illness used were the 1995 and 1996 HSA age-sex-race stratum specific mortality and incidence rates for five conditions.
The conditions selected consisted of specific events for which hospitalization is a proxy for the incidence of disease: hospitalizations for hip fracture, cancer of the colon or lung treated surgically, gastro-intestinal hemorrhage, acute myocardial infarction or stroke (Wennberg, NEJM 1984; Wennberg, Lancet 1987).
For each outcome, we regressed the crude HSA stratum-specific rate against age, sex, race and all higher order interactions as well as the crude HSA age-sex-race specific illness rates, for each year separately, weighting by the HSA stratum Medicare population.
