The little-known season of "Pre-Lent," once marked by Roman Catholic rite, developed in the 6th century and included the three Sundays prior to the beginning of Lent.
These Sundays were called, respectively, Septuagesima, Sexagesima, and Quinquagesima -- roughly 70, 60, and 50 days before Easter.
As of 1969, Sexagesima is no longer recognized by the Roman Catholic Church.

Going backwards again - passing Sexagesima and Septuagesima we now look back to Epiphany counting the remaining Sundays.
