In jazz music a sextet is any group of six players, usually containing a drum set (pedal bass, snaredrum sometimes brushed, top hat cymbal, brushed cymbal), string bass or electric bass, and groups of one or two of the following instruments, guitar, trumpet, saxophone, clarinet, or trombone.
Sextet is also the name of a free improvisation quartet from Northern California.
Sextet is known for their percusive form of free jazz.

 Amazon.ca: Sextet 2 In G Mag/Ser In C Maj: Music: Ernst von Dohnanyi,Johannes Brahms,Dmitry Sitkovetsky,NES Chamber ...   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-05)
The Dohnanyi Serenade in C Major was originally a string trio (a youthful opus 10) and the Brahms a string sextet.
As for the String Sextet, I think it takes a brave person indeed to take liberties with the work of the formidable Dr. Brahms, but Dmitry Sitkovetsky succeeds in his effort to present a convincing reinterpretation of that ambiguous and complex piece of music.
Perhaps I prefer the Sextet version in the end, but I will return to it with a deeper understanding of its true nature and a greater appreciation of its subtleties.

The Joachim Raff Society - String Sextet   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-05)
It was also the year when he created two masterful works for chamber ensembles - the String Octet op.176 and the String Sextet in G minor op.178.
The Sextet medium was still a novelty when the work was written - only Brahms' pair of works from the last decade were then well known.
The Sextet begins with an agitated and earnest episode in G minor before relaxing into a long, casual and almost bucolic tune.

With his all-star sextet, John Kirby was able to make a far-reaching impact on jazz, broadening the musical palette while maintaining a delicate balance between written and improvised passages.
An all-star sextet was eventually formed consisting of Charlie Shavers-trumpet (usually muted), Russell Procope-saxophone, Buster Bailey-clarinet, Billy Kyle-piano and O'Neil Spencer-drums.
During the sextet's initial 11 month's residency, the "Onyx Club Boys" gained a wide reputation as "The Biggest Little Big Band In The Land." The seventh member of this group was singer, Maxine Sullivan.

Brass Sextet, composed in 1962/64 for two trumpets, two horns, trombone and tuba, is something of a curiosity.
This was several years before he began to become known for the repetitive minimalist techniques which launched him to fame and have enabled him to enter some of the world's leading opera houses.
The Sextet is not listed by Glass now, but it was actually published in England in 1966 by Novello and Co. in their Music for Today Series edited by Geoffrey Bush.

Sextet is a minimalist composition by Steve Reich.
It is written for an ensemble of four percussionists and two keyboardists, hence the title.
The piece broken into five movements and, like many other Reich compositions, Sextet has an arch form: A-B-C-B-A. The paired movements share a tempo and a particular cycle of chords.

Sextet is a very fun piece, with the gradually changing marimba melodies & also marimbas played with bows to get longer notes than a marimba can usually do.
For me Sextet is the lesser of the two pieces, but still well worth having even if it was the only thing on the disk.
I write this review to rather pedantically correct other reviewers in that it is a bowed *vibraphone*, not bowed *marimba*, used to such interesting effect in the 'Sextet', as is made clear in the liner notes.

The range of the Sextet's repertoire is hardly illicit.
No one should be shocked that The Illicit Sextet is as good as it is. It would be disturbing if, through poor promotion or distribution, they did not go any further than this extraordinary CD and their Midwest homes.
If this is Chapter One, fans of The Illicit Sextet are waiting anxiously for the succeeding chapters in what one hopes will be an ongoing story-telling session in their vivid vernacular of modern jazz.

Bley continued to make mostly mellow, untroubled music for satisfied, sensible ECM shoppers on this 1987 release, keeping any larger or quirkier ambitions under wraps in the hope perhaps of attracting a wider audience.
Here Bley pares down the numbers of her forces to six -- herself on organ, Hiram Bullock (guitar), Larry Willis (piano), Steve Swallow (bass), Victor Lewis (drums) and Don Alias (percussion) -- and the group sails or saunters through a sextet of unambiguously easygoing numbers.
The best of the lot has the effervescent title "The Girl Who Cried Champagne," an appealingly cool, percolating Latin groove with near-lounge-style organ from Bley and a mildly incendiary rock solo from Bullock, while "Healing Power" comes close to breaking into a pounding rock beat.
