  Sextette
Watching "Sextette" was one of the most unsettling film experiences (make that experiences, period) I've had in recent memory.
"Sextette" features the eighty-three year old West in her last role as "Marlo Manners", a sashaying Hollywood beauty queen that everyone can't help but fall over, even as she is marrying for the sixth time (Timothy Dalton, looking very young and very hapless throughout).
The whole modus operandi around "Sextette" is to get the octogenerian West to mumble out as many her pistol-come-up-and-see-me-sometime-between -the-sheets one liners as humanly possible in the space of 91 shitty minutes.

Sextette - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Sextette is a 1978 Crown International comedy/musical motion picture starring Mae West.
Sextette became the source of several urban legends.
One such persistent rumor is that West could not remember any of her lines and had to wear a concealed earpiece under her wig to have her lines fed to her.

She was 85 when she made this film which co-starred a young Timothy Dalton, who went on to have a career in spite of it.
Sextette has become something of a "camp" novelty in recent years, because it reflects the ultimate Hollywood conceit and unfortunate choice: how a star with a long, distinguished and pioneering career made a film convinced that everyone would believe she looked as young as she yearned to look.
I originally read about Sextette but missed it because when it came out I was overseas, writing in Spain for the Christian Science Monitor and other newspapers.

Sextette tells the story of Marlo Manners, played by Mae West, who is in London to marry her sixth husband.
Her unique delivery coupled with memorable, highly quotable double entendres ("Is that a gun in your pocket or are you just glad to see me?") were the highlights of her early-'30s movies.
In SEXTETTE (1978), her final film, a fossilized, eighty-something Mae delivers the same kind of dialogue that made her famous way back when, and the result is a textbook example of how not to grow old gracefully.

The plot is indeed thin and rather silly; but Sextette keeps your attention with its campy qualities and outlandish scenarios.
Nevertheless, in Sextette Mae still did what she always did best--delivering punchy one line double-entendres and shimmying all over the screen as self-confident as ever.
I hope I can be forgiven for thinking that Timothy Dalton, who makes up the final member of the Sextette of the title is not quite in their league (and by the way, "sex" is Latin for "six" and I suspect that the original title is more about this than it is about "the act").

Upon the couples arrival at the hotel for their honeymoon, they are greeted by the bellhops with the rousing song 'Hooray for Hollywood.' The newlyweds idyll is interrupted, however, when Marlowe becomes involved in some fancy mattress dancing with her former husbands.
Now she has returned to the place where the legend crystalized through the flickering fl and white images of Lady Lou, Tira, Ruby, and the rest of the titillating gang of characters she played.
She is starring as Marlowe Manners in Sextette, her twelfth film, adapted from a play she wrote in 1961.

Recently I watched Sextette with a friend and we laughed and loved every moment of the Magic Of Mae West with a fun cast of amusing characters including a wonderful performance by Dom Deluise...and watch how Mae lights up when George Raft appears on screen with her!!!
She was a sex kitten - even a provacateur way ahead of her time - in mostly sexual comedies of the 1930's and 1940's.
In Sextette, West chose to resurrect a script she had written for production back in the 1930's.

Sextette is not one of those movies that has had its badness hyped to death on the IMDB by people who've never seen it.
Sextette is not a 'guilty pleasure' or a 'so bad it's hilarious' or any of those standard B-movie epithets.
Sextette is, by quite a long chalk, THE worst movie I have ever seen.

 Sextette
In this case, it’s the badly aged Mae West, who moves around this film in a tragicomical, self-mocking stupor, barely able to stand, spouting off her old famous bits of dialogue with a look of exhaustion rather than with the defiant, sex-goddess spirit that made her famous long ago.
Nevertheless, it should be remembered that Sextette is based off a play written by Mae West herself (!) and, of course, no one flmailed her into appearing in this (at least, not to my knowledge), so you can’t exactly call her a victim in this fiasco...
Hopefully I haven't given the message that the only problem with Sextette is that "eeeww, an old, sexually active Mae West is gross!" In fact, this is really a problem for anyone who has fond memories of Mae West at all (and I am among them).

"The creepiest monster movie of the year to date must certainly be "Sextette," in which we are presented with the bizarre sight of the 87-year-old seemingly arthritic Mae West tottering around as she mouths some of her better known one-liners and pretends to be the kind of sex-object that drives men to suicide.

The real intent of "Sextette" was to be a cinematic showcase for the legendary Mae West.

But by the time of "Sextette", she just didn't have it any more.

Marvin Kaye, editor, The Vampire Sextette
The Vampire Sextette is a group of six novellas compiled by the well-known anthologist Marvin Kaye.
In his introduction, "The Erotic Myth of Blood," Kaye explains that the title refers not only to the number of vampire tales included, but also to the fact that sex is a major component of all of the stories.
As to the erotic aspect of the tales in Sextette, it's as uneven as the stories themselves.

One of my fondest memories of that busy and involving week was watching Raymond's widow, Mitzi Scott, as she laughed and then dabbed her eyes in the semi-darkness while the Beau Hunks Sextette brought her husband's music to life on stage.
The Beau Hunks Sextette worried about displeasing the ghost of the maestro, so they lived with this music a long time before entering the studio.
To solidify their association with the band from which they emerged, the ensemble is now officially known as the Beau Hunks Sextette.

I hoped to discover new authors I might enjoy; discovering new authors you might never have looked twice at is surely one of the joys of anthologies such as this one.
Although not at a terrible work by any stretch, and not at all dependent on familiarity with his other novels, I can't say that "The Other Side of Midnight" would make me seek out Kim Newman's novels and collections if I were not already predisposed to do so.
Were they to stand on their own, the stories by Somtow, Lee, and Stableford would deserve a far higher rating, but the other three authors aren't quite up to snuff (though Kim Newman's novella is still, in the end, a lot of fun).
