Brain differences in sheep linked to sexual partner preference
A total of 27 sheep were studied: nine rams that preferred to mate with males, eight rams that preferred to mate with females, and ten ewes.
Research was focused on the preoptic hypothalamus, a region of the brain known to be involved in sexual behaviors and partner preferences; researchers identified a group of neurons there called the sexually dimorphic nucleus.
The sexually dimorphic nucleus was measured by examining the extent and level of expression of aromatase, a key enzyme in a hormonal pathway that is involved in the development and maintenance of masculine characteristics.

Sexual selection - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Sexual selection is a theory proposed by Charles Darwin that states that the frequency of traits can increase or decrease depending on the attractiveness or fertility of the bearer.
Sexual preference creates a specialized tendency towards homogamy that provides a system by which a group constantly invaded by the diffusion of unfavourable genes may suppress ill effects.
Because traits held to be due to sexual selection often conflict with the survival fitness of the individual, the question then arises as to why, in nature, in which survival of the fittest is considered the rule of thumb, such apparent liabilities are allowed to persist.

 Homosexuality and Bisexuality
"Sexual orientation" is a term used to refer to a person's emotional, romantic, and sexual attraction to individuals of a particular gender (male or female).
Sexual orientation involves a person's feelings and sense of identity; it may or may not be evident in the person's appearance or behavior.
Some people who are homosexual or bisexual may hide their sexual orientation and/or live as heterosexuals to avoid the prejudice that exists against people who are homosexual and bisexual or to avoid their own moral dilemmas felt when their sexual orientation is incompatible with their personal beliefs.

Møller (1994) defined sexual selection as occurring "as a result of a non-random association between a (secondary sexual) character and a component of mating success." This association will cause the character to be selected in a population, regardless of whether it is otherwise useful to an individual.
In their model, females choose the preferred red-winged flbirds because their male offspring will later be preferred, either because they out compete other males in a dominance hierarchy or are simply more attractive to females.
Preference for handicaps and assessment of fluctuating asymmetries are two of the mechanisms that females employ to assess the quality of their mates.

Sexual preference - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
It was used in the 20th century by gay rights advocates who sought to promote the view that each person should have the right to seek out the partner they prefer, whether of the opposite sex, the same sex, or both sexes.
Later, gay rights advocates preferred the term sexual orientation to avoid the connotation that homosexuality and heterosexuality were matters of "preference" or lifestyle choices, since they viewed them as inherent and unchangeable (Since it became commonly, yet not universally, believed among them that homosexuality was something one is born with).
"Sexual orientation" is the term recommended by the Associated Press stylebook when used in print.

LGBT Health Terminology - LGBT Health Channel
Sexual orientation is preferred to sexual preference by some people, because preference implies that attraction is a choice instead of an innate characteristic.
For others, sexual preference is acceptable or preferred, because it implies that primary sexual attraction is a choice, which may be fueled by sociopolitical reasons.
Regardless, sexual orientation is a component of character and is different than sexual behavior, as some people are psychologically attracted to both sexes but have sex with only one.

Feminism and Women's Studies: Sexual Identity and Gender Identity Glossary   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-11)
The existence and perpetuation of gender and sexual identities is based in the historic and continuing oppression (systematic mistreatment condoned by society as a whole) of people do not conform to certain aspects of society's gender roles.
Sexual identity refers to how one thinks of oneself in terms of whom one is sexually and romantically attracted to, specifically whether one is attracted to members of the same gender as one's own or the other gender than one's own.
Sexual preference emphasizes that some people feel that one does or should have some control or influence over the development of one's sexual and romantic attractions or sexual one's orientation.

Sexual Rights are Human Rights: A MADRE Position Paper | MADRE: An International Women's Human Rights Organization
MADRE understands that sexual rights—including the right to exercise and express sexuality freely and safely; be protected from sexual violence and discrimination; be in charge of decisions about one’s own body; have access to information and services necessary for sexual health; and experience sexual pleasure—are human rights.
The sexual rights of women, young people, gays, lesbians, bisexuals, and transgendered people are especially vulnerable—and, as emphasized by the recent murder of Sierra Leone’s lesbian rights activist Fannyann Eddy, those working actively to secure sexual rights are particularly at risk.
When sexual rights are on the agenda, fundamentalist governments ally with the Vatican and the Christian Right, which suddenly assert “respect for cultural difference” as a pretense for disregarding international human rights standards.

 Being Bisexual
Because biological, social, and cultural factors are different for each person, everyone's sexuality is highly individual, whether they are bisexual, gay or lesbian, heterosexual, or asexual.
Since we are generally socialized as heterosexuals, bisexuality is a stage that many people experience as part of the process of acknowledging their sexual preference.
The orientation which once proposed a serious challenge to the gender polarity involved in sexuality is now coming of age while disputing former boundaries and causing the more established views on sexual preference to redefine themselves.

Crosswalk.com - Sexual 'Preference or Orientation' Clause Upheld at ATT
Past proposals to remove the "sexual preference or orientation" language in ATT's policy have failed, but not by such a large margin.
ATT decided to place "sexual preference or orientation" in its Equal Opportunity Statement because of its long-standing policy against non-discrimination in the workplace, said company spokeswoman Cindy Neale.
Strobhar said this makes the sexual preference clause contradictory, because even though it seeks to prevent discrimination, the company is discriminating against heterosexual couples by virtue of excluding them from receiving corporate benefits.

frontline: assault on gay america: a 'gay gene?': is homosexuality inherited?
Although his data showed that human sexual preference "is amenable to study at the biological level," he noted that it was impossible to be certain whether the anatomical differences between the brains of gay and straight men were a cause or a consequence of their preference.[8]
He found that the incidence of homosexual preference in these family members was strikingly higher (13.5 percent) than the rate of homosexuality among the whole sample (2 percent).
The standard measure of heritability is the sum of all genetic influences, and it ignores potentially complex interactions--for example, the influence of the family milieu on the behavioral expression of a gene influencing sexual preference.

Bem's Theory of Sexual Orientation: Implications for Treatment and Prevention
He rejects biological explanations---instead attempting to understand the development of sexual preference within the context of the "optimal level of arousal" theory of human motivation.
As applied to sexual preference, the theory contends that human beings are sexually attracted to those whom they have perceived as dissimilar, yet not too dissimilar to themselves.
According to his theory, both homosexuality and heterosexuality are acquired constructions, and as such, neither is "natural." Sexual preference is determined not by our genes, but by the way we interact with others, he believes, and the way we feel about ourselves in the context of same-sex and opposite-sex peers.

To make it easier to quantify behavior for research purposes, the scale has 7 equal, numbered intervals, but it is a contimuum and in-between points (such as 1.5 or 2.67) may be used.

Changes in male sexual preference favor the switch to both heterosexuality and bisexuality in both the Under-25 and 25-34 age cohorts.
The fact that the Under-25 females seem to be expressing greater preference for bisexuality may be indicative of the fact that high testosterone levels in females correlate with non-heterosexual behavior, which is implicated by a number of other studies.
Testosterone depletion does not seem to be as active in male sexual preference changes, but as males age, our results indicate that if their sexual preference changes, they are more likely to favor non-heterosexuality.

Sexual Preference In Women Linked To Difference In The Inner Ear
Echo-like sounds made by the inner ears of homosexual and bisexual women are weaker than the same sounds made by heterosexual women, according to a new report.
"The finding suggests that the inner ears and some unknown brain structures responsible for sexual preference are masculinized in homosexual and bisexual women because men also exhibit weaker echo-like sounds in their inner ears," says Dennis McFadden of the University of Texas, lead author of the study.
McFadden's study, funded by the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders, is published in the March 3 issue of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

One of earliest and most important sexual orientation classification schemes was proposed by [Karl Heinrich] Ulrichs in a series of pamphlets he published privately in the 1860s.
Today's preferred terms and the term "sexual orientation" itself have a wide variety' of definitions in the literature but these generally comprise one or both of two components: a "psychological" component and a "behavioral" component.
Psychological components of definitions may include the terms "sexual passion," "sexual urge," "sexual feelings," "sexual attraction," "sexual interest," "sexual arousal," "sexual desire," "affectional preference," "sexual instinct," "sexual orientation identity," and "sexual preference." Each of these terms may have a distinct meaning and not necessarily be indicative of the same phenomenon.
