Diana Mertz Hsieh: Sexuality in Islamic Cultures   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
That sexual repression and regulation was and is still commonplace in Judeo-Christian societies provides some prima facie evidence that the sexual repression in Islamic societies is not primarily a result of the influence of the religion.
Two basic ideas seem to lie at the root of the justifications for sexual repression, namely that unregulated contact between the sexes is dangerous and that the sexes have vastly different "natural" roles in life and in society.
The forms that the sexual repression in Islamic society are as varied as the justifications for that repression, although some practices seem relatively universal.

The usual distortion is that he advocated "free" sexual expression - "obey that impulse" - amounting to a wild and frantic promiscuity ever seeking a mystical, ecstatic orgasm that is supposed to cure all neuroses and even physical ills.
Repression occurs when parents or nurturers restrict emotional expres-sion in the growing child through a series of repeated verbots - "Boys don't cry"; "You must not leave a scrap on your plate"; "Stop touching yourself"; etc. - without regard for the child's needs.
Its chief instrument is the suppression of sexuality in the infant and the adolescent.

 Sigmund Freud (1856-1939).
Freud was big on hypnosis, but it eventually took a second seat to another of his ideas, that of "free association." Freud placed much emphasis on infantile sexuality and emphasized that many of our problems in later life come from our relationships with our parents, the so-called Oedipus complex.
2 The symptoms of neurosis, according to Freud, "are essentially substitute gratifications for unfulfilled sexual wishes." From Freud's teachings sprang a whole industry; which has milked, and continues to milk, most all of western society; as a sizable portion of the population goes about psychoanalyzing their fellows.
So repression is one of the so-called "defence mechanisms," by which a person attempts to avoid inner conflicts.

Owing to their repression, neurotics have sacrifices many sources of mental energy whose contributions would have been of great value in the formation of their character and in their activity in life.

External factors consolidate sexual repression and the sexual repression predisposes to the influence of the external factors.
It is impossible to understand how or why sexual repression originated - and what influences maintain, enhance or weaken it without seeing the problem in a much wider context, namely that of the historical evolution of relations between the sexes, in particular of the evolution of such human relationships as kinship and marriage.
We are not saying that sexual factors are to be substituted for economic ones in the understanding of social reality or that understanding sexual repression will automatically generate an insight into the mechanisms of exploitation and alienation which are at the root of class society.
