A first impression of the works is intended to give an overview of the wide range of the Hamburg Sezession: landscapes painted by Eduard Bargheer and Wilhelm Grimm hang next to portraits by Anita Rée and Friedrich Ahlers-Hestermann and stlll lifes by Emil Maetzel and Dorothea Maetzel-Johannsen.
The Hamburg Sezession — Eduard Bargheer, Rolf Nesch, Anita Rée and some 30 other artists — drew the inspiration for their work from quite different sources: the influence of Munch is recognizable in many of Bargheer’s paintings, for instance in the harbour study “Night Arrival”.
The Hamburg Sezession was unable to regain its former eminence with the new composition of its members.

Klimt was a prominent member of an innovating group of artists called 'Sezession' and is considered to be one of the main pioneers of modern art.
His work is extremely recognizable due to his monumental style combined with Byzantine-like ornamental art and classical symbolism, created against the background of romanticism which was so characteristic of his time.
In Sezession's own words: "Art guides us to an ideal realm, the only place where we will be able to find pure joy, pure happiness and pure love.
