Sgurr Dearg - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Sgurr Dearg is a mountain in the Cuillin on the Isle of Skye, Scotland.
Sgurr Dearg lies on the main Cuillin ridge at the junction of Coire Lagan, Coire na Banachdich and Coir'-uisg.
Although the name Sgurr Dearg refers to the mountain as a whole, references to the "summit" of Sgurr Dearg are, unless otherwise qualified, generally taken to indicate the 978 metre top immediately below the Inaccessible Pinnacle on the north-western side.

The ascent starts on Sron Dearg which is the W ridge of Sgurr Dearg Beag up grass and scree to a rocky ridge with some scrambling to reach Sgurr Dearg.

SUMMARY : Sgurr Dearg is a fantastic viewpoint, as well as being one of the most dramatic spots on the Cuillin ridge, being overtopped by the famous and incredible Inaccessible Pinnacle.
This path emerges suddenly at the summit of Sgurr Dearg, with the startling sight of the Inaccessible Pinnacle ('Inn Pinn' to its friends) directly ahead.
The easiest descent from Sgurr Dearg Beag is again on the left side; it is possible to see a clear section of path from just below the crest of the ridge.

Sgurr Dearg itself was clearly not going to present any difficulties though, and so the plan was to climb up to the pinnacle and then play it by ear.
However, by the time we reached the Sgurr Dearg summit the weather appeared to be on the turn again, with the clouds lowering and rain in the air.
It had certainly not compared with the terrors of Sgurr Mhic Choinnich, the next Munro along the ridge, that I'd climbed on a clear day, solo and unroped, some 13 years earlier.

Stephen had considered Sgurr nan Gillean for Sunday, weather permitting, of course, and a small group of about nine went with him on Saturday to climb two Corbetts (hills from 2.000 to 3,000 feet high).
Mineralogically, this rock is identical to basalt which is fairly nearby in forming an area from the Giants Causeway in Ireland under the sea to Staffa in Scotland, both areas I have previously written on.
If you can manage the tourist route up sgurr nan gillean then you can definately cope with the slopes of sgurr dearg (unfortunately without climbing the innaccessible pinnacle you don't reach the true summit).

Overview of Sgurr Dearg   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-10)
Sgurr Dearg is located on the Cuillin Ridge on the Isle of Skye, in Highland Council, and is most famously known for the extraordinary blade of rock known as the 'Inaccessible Pinnacle', which is located on the southeast side of the summit.
Any climbing of this peak will also involve a 24m (79 feet) abseil to the summit, hence its being known as the 'Inaccessible Pinnacle'.
The name Sgurr Dearg is derived from Gaelic, meaning "red peak".
