At this point we turned South West and climbed the boulder field to the ridge between Sgurr Beag and Sgurr nan Gillean.
Once on the ridge we turned Northwards and followed the ridge to the castle of rock that is the summit of Sgurr nan Gillean.

The only mountain left for me to walk up with some scrambling within my ability was Sgurr nan Gillean and I have had ambitions to climb it for some years now.
Stephen had considered Sgurr nan Gillean for Sunday, weather permitting, of course, and a small group of about nine went with him on Saturday to climb two Corbetts (hills from 2.000 to 3,000 feet high).
Mineralogically, this rock is identical to basalt which is fairly nearby in forming an area from the Giants Causeway in Ireland under the sea to Staffa in Scotland, both areas I have previously written on.

Sgurr nan Gillean is at the north end of the Cuillin ridge and is usually seen across the moor from Sligachan Hotel.
The summit forms a perfect pyramid on the skyline to the left of the equally characteristic Basteir Tooth.
The sky had cleared by now to reveal most of the ridge although Sgurr nan Gillean stubbornly held onto its cap of cloud.

Sgurr nan Gillean is one of the most northerly peaks and one of the finest on the Black Cuillin Ridge with its sharply pointed summit.
The Cuillin are composed of gabbro rock which gives wonderful grip even when wet, but these mountains have narrow ridges and pointed summits which require scrambling or even rock-climbing to reach the summit.
Be careful when you're approaching from the ridge between Sgurr Beag and Sgurr nan Gillean, keep to the left to reach the summit, that's a lot easier and less exposed than following the top of the ridge.

A group of us are doing the west ridge of sgurr nan gillean this weekend, however i'm not sure what the best route to belach a Bhastier is.
Dempsters book suggests crossing the allt dearg beag (at the bridge) and following the tourist route before striking up right above Bhasteir gorge, however his map looks like you follow the burn and cross further up, then up to above the gorge before traversing to the beleach.
