THE PKM GENERAL PURPOSE MACHINE GUN
For infantry the SG43/SGM was just a medium machine gun like the DS-39 or Maxim, however, shortly after WWII, a belt fed version of Degtyarev's DPM light machine gun, the RP-46 was adopted as 'the company machine gun'.
The RPD light machine gun firing an intermediate 7.62 x 39 mm M43 round was considered for the GPMG role.
If you have examined buffers in other machine guns, the buffer may be a fancy name for 1/4 inch thick plate of fiber-reinforced reddish plastic placed at rear end of the recoil spring guide.

The WWII Fighter Gun Debate   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-15)
The Army guns were the Type 89 model 1, an indigeneous drum-fed design used in flexible installations; the Type 89 model 2, a copy of the Vickers, and the Type 98, a copy of the MG15.
The Browning gun survived in the gun turrets of British bombers, but was increasingly ineffective: At the end of the war only incendiary ammunition was used, because the AP round was not able to penetrate the armour of modern fighters.
The gun was later enlarged to 20mm calibre as the MG 151/20, and this replaced the original 15mm version in fighter applications.

 The Petlyakov Pe-2
A ventral position for a ShKAS gun on a flexible mount was fitted under the rear fuselage for protection below and to the rear, to be operated by a third crew member who sighted the weapon with a periscopic sight, with eyelike portholes on either side of the fuselage to provide more visibility.
The flexible ShKAS light machine gun in the rear of the cockpit was replaced after early production by a more potent Berezin UBT 12.7 millimeter machine gun, and one of the fixed ShKAS guns in the nose was also replaced by a heavy UBT machine gun with 150 rounds.
The rear turret of the Pe-2 was retained, though the ventral gun was removed, to be replaced by a fixed rearward-firing ShKAS light machine gun with 250 rounds in the tail, a scheme derived from the VI-100 fighter.

 Encyclopedia: Aleksandr Ivanovich Pokryshkin
Pokryshkin survived several close calls during this time - a machine gun round drove through the right side of the cockpit, cut his shoulder straps, ricocheted off the left side and scratching his chin covered the entire windscreen in blood.
Pokryshkin tried to defend his fighter, one of the very few remaining serviceable aircraft, by removing a flexible machine gun from the nearby bomber, and placing it on top of his fighter's fuselage.
Pokryshkin had been made a famous hero by the propaganda machine, and he was not allowed to fly as often because of fear of him being killed.

SimHQ Forums: New machine gun & cannon damage proposal !   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-15)
I have now been looking at gun effectiveness, in terms of their destructive effect assuming that they did score a hit (as with the "gun range" work, this was in the context of computer games).
The US gun had much better range and hit probability, and was much better at penetrating armour, so it was the gun to have at long range (or for ground attack), but at short range the German gun could blow a fighter apart with one solid hit.
Machine guns of any calibre were also less effective in dealing with bombers than were cannon firing explosive shells.

The machine was able to carry a 45-36-type torpedo on an external bracket and drop it using methods of high or low-altitude torpedoing.
Besides, naval modifications of IL-4 were also armed with missile weapons – six high-explosive shells PS-132, which were fixed under the wings and were intended for suppression of antiaircraft guns of torpedoes ships, destroying defense ships, torpedo boats and not flying seaplanes.

 The Ultimate Shturmovik: Sukhoi's Long-Ranging Su-8
Defensive armament consisted of a 12.7-mm Beresin machine gun flexibly mounted in the rear cockpit (or in a small power-driven turret, according to some sources) and a 7.62-mm ShKAS machine gun firing from a ventral position.
The guns were housed in a broad, shallow pod under the center fuselage.
For sighting and for attacks on soft targets, eight 7.62-mm ShKAS machine guns were mounted in the wings immediately outboard of the propellers, each gun being capable of rates of fire between 1800 and 2700 rounds/min.

Soviet military aircraft Yakovlev BB-22 (Yak-2)
Such a machine, aviation specialists contended, could serve as an escort fighter, a short-range reconnaissance aircrat and a light bomber.
The true facts were unknown in the summer of 1939 and, simultaneously with the state testing of the BB-22, the Mock-up Commission was working at plant No.115, where the plans for converting the aircraft to a bomber were discussed in the presence of designers and representatives of the NII VVS.
Defects of the gun and bomb armament and inadequate stability were not overcome.

The 'Night Witches' adopted a dangerous tactic in which, flying in formations of three aircraft, the first two aircraft would fly into the target drawing the searchlights and flak onto themselves and away from the third aircraft that would attack the target.

The design concept was borrowed from the German MK43 assault rifle (although the mechanism is different) and the gun is relatively crude and simple.
The mechanism of the PP-90M and PP-93 appears to be more sophisticated than the advanced primer ignition blowback system normally used in SMGs, as the publicity refers to the accuracy of automatic fire achieved by "the smooth operation of the barrel/bolt group", which implies a short-recoil design.
In appearance these resemble modern compact SMGs rather than rifle-calibre weapons and they weigh in at an astonishing 2.42kg with a loaded 20-round magazine; less than half that of the current British L85 rifle.

As the Russians did not have enough of the UBT guns, the second variant was introduced.

I currently believe that BoB treats the volume of gun fire equal to the tracer fire, meaning that there appears to be no bullets in between the tracer rounds (visual ID from hits on planes and water).
Len Deighton reckons that a typical RAF ammunition load during the BoB was four guns with standard ball, two with AP, and two with de Wilde.
The handheld guns have a slower burst rate of fire than say the Hurri and Spit but all the bullets are not tracers.

The rest of the gun armament comprised two 0.3 inch (7,62 mm) ShKAS fixed forward-firing weapons on the sides of the forward fuselage in an installation controlled by the pilot.
Also it was configured as a two-seater, with a remote-controlled mounting for a UBK gun (identical to the VI) in the tail.
