Today, the SAR-controlled Sha Tau Kok is a quiet rural town, part of North District.
The mainland Shatoujiao is a bustling metropolis in comparison to Sha Tau Kok in the Hong Kong SAR, due to its location in the Yantian Qu (district) of Shenzhen Special Economic Zone.

 Sha Tau Kok Railway - Encyclopedia, History, Geography and Biography
Sha Tau Kok Railway was a narrow gauge railway running from Fanling to Sha Tau Kok in the northern New Territories area of Hong Kong.
It was built with the narrow gauge tracks of the Kowloon-Canton Railway (now the KCR East Rail), when the latter was converted into standard gauge.
It was no longer run on April 1, 1928 when the Sha Tau Kok Road, a highway parallel to the tracks, was in service.

The head of the valley, which leads down to Hok Tau reservoir, is an open area of disused rice fields with three abandoned villages on the perimeter.
We took the road downwards and once beyond the entrance to the reservoir, we were on a wider road that was open to traffic, but once again the only cars were those leaving the reservoir area.

The Leung Yeuk Tau area was settled by a branch of the Tang clan, the largest of the New Territories clans whose main home is at Kam Tin, in the 13th century.
The area was connected to Hong Kong by the construction of the KCR early this century and for a while there was a branch line to Sha Tau Kok, although no trace of this seems to have survived.
Hok Tau Wai is a small village (unwalled despite its name) in a picturesque setting at the bottom of the valley leading up to Hok Tau Reservoir.

The new boundary bridge between the Sha Tau Kok and Shatoujiao Control Points will be opened to traffic at 10am on the same day.

Authorities in China have reportedly blocked a tunnel, suspected of being built by smugglers, to link a border town in the southern city of Shenzhen with neighbouring Hong Kong.
Police in Shenzhen filled in the 25-metre long tunnel after contacting the owner of an apartment in the town of Sha Tau Kok.
The tunnel was first discovered at the end of 2001, but was sealed off again in November last year after police found works being carried out.
