During his heyday, Shabba Ranks was arguably the most popular dancehall toaster in the world.
Shabba Ranks was born Rexton Rawlston Fernando Gordon on January 17, 1966, in Sturgetown, Jamaica.

Shabba released his debut single in 1980 at the age of 15 under the name Co-Pilot, "Heat Under Sufferer's Feet", a record on a roots theme.
Shabba's next album, 'Rappin With The ladies', was his first to be produced by Gussie Clarke at his ruling Music Works studio, and features duets with the cream of reggae's female singers - J.C.Lodge, Deborahe Glasgow, Rebel Princess, and the teenage Kristal.
Since this biography was written, Shabba has achieved international stardom with a string of hits, including a re-recording of "Mr Loverman" which reached No.2 in the UK on the Sony label.

Shabba's 1991 Epic Records debut captures the sophistication of his roughneck reggae style, although Jamaica's breakout dancehall deejay (rapper) voiced his best efforts before signing to the American label and being marketed as an X-rated buffoon.
On his own for the rest of the cuts, Shabba proves himself to be a languid yet keen styler of time.
Shabba rants about his hero Yellowman on Where Does Slackness Come From?, and about blue movies and reality, casually dropping profundities like "Me I went to high school/Was once a prefect/Took some great subjects English and mathematics/But my greatest subject was sex." (Fist-A-Ris).

This Shabba Ranks release is an early snapshot of the dancehall singer's hugely popular formula.
The combination of Shabba's muscular voice, sexy lyrics, and the bass-propelled dancehall sound made GOLDEN TOUCH a hit in Jamaica and the UK, and set the stage for 1992's follow-up, the international chart-topping, Grammy-winning AS RAW AS EVER.
Shabba Ranks was ragga's figurehead in the early '90s, delivering rude & lewd "slackness" lyrics (sample title: "Hard & Stiff") with a rough gravelly voice over equally aggressive, electronic beats.

Review - Home T, Cocoa Tea, Shabba Ranks : Pirates' Anthem
It's first releases were instantly successful: Dr. Alimatado's legendary 'Best Dressed Chicken In Town' crossed over to achieve cult status in the punk era, and Greensleeves built on this success with a catalogue brimful of classic albums and huge crossover hits like Shaggy's 'Oh Carolina', Beenie Man's 'Who Am I?' and Mr.
The album was first released 1989 as "Holding On" and was produced by Augustus "Gussie" Clarke for his Anchor Recording Company.
Gussie's crystal clear productions were ruling the scene and Cocoa Tea and Shabba Ranks were some of the most consistent hitmakers of that time.

It's a tribute to Shabba Ranks' popularity that he could record so many albums for a major record label like Epic (This was his fifth and final for the label.).
Both of these were released as singles, and the latter was especially popular, although the remix included here is inferior to the original version.
Most of these tracks will probably be familiar, diminishing their impact, but it's hard to deny that there is some nice crossover material on Shabba Ranks and Friends.

He's gained international recognition and praise from fans and musicians alike, delivering semi-rapped lines with his gravelly vocals on hundreds of classic tracks -- often with support from major artists like KRS-One, Maxi-Priest and Queen Latifah among others.
As an artist on Epic records, Ranks has reached a much larger audience than many of his peers, gaining fans all over the world, especially in Japan and England.
With a couple of Grammys and name drops by artists like A Tribe Called Quest, there seems to be little chance of Shabba's reign ending.
