Shabo (also called Mikeyir) is an endangered language spoken by about 600 hunter-gatherers in southwestern Ethiopia, in the westernmost part of the Southern Nations, Nationalities, and People's Region.
It was first reported to be a separate language by Lionel Bender in 1977, using a wordlist gathered by the missionary Harvey Hoekstra.
The pronouns "I" and "he" have been compared to Surmic languages; however, there are also resemblances in the pronouns with the Omotic Gunza language (Bender 1983.) The gender distinctions made are unusual for Africa.

The Nilo-Saharan languages are a group of African languages spoken mainly in the upper parts of the Chari River and Nile rivers, including Nubia.
Particularly controversial is the inclusion of Songhay languages.
Proposals for the external relationships of Nilo-Saharan typically center on Niger-Congo languages : Gregersen (1972) grouped the two together to form Kongo-Saharan languages, whereas Blench (1995) actually proposed that Niger-Congo may simply be a member of Nilo-Saharan (coordinate with Central Sudanic languages.) However, such theories are treated with reserve by most historical linguists.
