  NVIDIA Shader Library
With a wide range of shaders including skin, natural effects, metals, post processing effects, and much more, the NVIDIA Shader Library exists to help developers easily find and integrate great shaders into their projects.
All the shaders in this library are provided free of charge for use in derivative works, whether academic, commercial, or personal (Full License).
This shader assumes the input model is a multi-segment unit square in XY with center at the origin.

  ParVis - Shader Library
Shaders are written in the shading language, and are compiled by the shader compiler into a form that can be loaded and executed by the library on behalf of the renderer.
Once the shaders have been bound to their respective primitives, the renderer determines the points at which the shading calculations are to be performed.
The shader instance is the object that the renderer uses to perform shading, and it is the responsibility of the renderer to keep track of which shader is to be applied to each rendering primitive.

 Shader - DmWiki
A shader is commonly said when referring to a custom program that resides on the graphics processing unit.
A shader is a set of instructions that can be executed either for each vertex or each pixel.
High level shader languages also enabled programmers to easily experiment with shader programs and create stunning effects which can be seen in numerous AAA titles.

A geometry shader has a fixed output primitive type (point, line strip, or triangle strip) and emits vertices to define a new primitive.
A geometry shader is limited in the number of vertices it may emit per invocation.
You can create as many shaders as you want to add to a program, but remember that there can only be a main function for the set of vertex shaders and one main function for the set of fragment shaders in each single program.

The value in r0 at the end of the shader is the pixel color for the shader.
Shader pre-processing will fail CreatePixelShader on any shader that attempts to read from a temporary register that has not been written by a previous instruction.
For pixel shader version 1.4, texture registers are RO for texture addressing instructions, and texture registers can be neither read from nor written to by arithmetic instructions.

Shaders form a replacement for the fixed function pipeline and allow developers greater control over rendering output by providing the ability to modify pixels and vertices dynamically.

Writing HLSL Shaders   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-29)
For example, the output semantics for a vertex shader are used to link the outputs of the interpolators in the rasterizer to generate the input data for the pixel shader.
The pixel shader outputs are the values provided to the alpha blending unit for each of the render targets or the depth value written to the depth buffer.
A vertex shader that is consumed by the rasterizer and not exposed to the pixel shader must generate position data as a minimum.

These shaders are the key to what makes the graphics in games today look so much better than the graphics in games from 3, 4 or 5 years ago.
These shaders are programmable, so games developers can make their own, allowing them to create a unique look and feel for their game.
Companies like NVIDIA and ATI have standard libraries of shaders optimised to run on their cards, and these are also used by programmers where they don't need to create a particularly unique kind of effect.

If it does, then the shader is queried for the number and type of passes it requires to create the effect on the current hardware.
The system chooses the shader class that is best suited to render the required effect, and sets a table of function pointers to the appropriate shader (could also work through virtual functions, but I thought function pointers might be a bit more efficient in this case).
Local geometry chunk shader data represents the shader states that are tightly associated to an individual mesh chunk, but have no real connection to the scene itself.

One of the most important new features in DirectX Graphics is the addition of a programmable pipeline that provides an assembly language interface to the transformation and lighting hardware (vertex shader) and the pixel pipeline (pixel shader).
Shader programming is the new and real challenge for Game-Coders.
If you are not a lucky owner of a GeForce3/4TI, RADEON 8x00 or an equivalent graphics card (that supports Shaders in hardware), the standardized assembly interface will provide highly-tuned software vertex shaders that AMD and Intel have optimized for their CPUs.

Both blocks are responsible for specifying all the rendering parameters necessary to render the shader.
BindTexture also takes an optional third parameter which is another shader parameter that tells which frame of the texture you want to bind (if the texture has multiple frames built into it).
For example, if you have a shader that has an option to multiply the color from a third texture after it multiplies the base texture and lightmap, you'd have to copy the contents of your pixel shader into a separate.FXC file, add the code to multiply the third texture, and choose that file with pShaderShadow->SetPixelShader.

 ParVis - Shader Compiler (slc)
For more information on the functionality of the shader library and the shader compiler the reader is referred to the papers "Data Shaders" [2] and "Data Shader Language and Interface Specification" [3].
The primary reason for this is that for the shader to be loadable by the shader library it is important that the name of the shader (specified in the shading language within the file) and the name of the loadable object file be the same (excluding filename extensions).
Note that for a shader to work with the shader library the ouput file must have the same name as the shader that is described in that file with the correct filename extension.

Surface shaders are assigned to surfaces by the "Surface" command which requires the shader name (a string) and optionally a list of shader parameters.
When the shader is found, it is loaded into memory and executed as the scene is rendered.
One particularly useful option that both shaders compilers have is the "-I" flag which specifies a directory that contains source files which will be included in shaders via the #include preprocessor directive or implicitly when user functions not contained or explicitly included in the shader are used (the latter applies only to the PRMan compiler).

We might be able to include the new shader as part of a subsequent release.) Second, you or someone else may have written a Maya shader plug-in that of course Mango has never seen before.
Although Gelato as of version 2.1 executes shaders in demand-driven order, there is as yet no explicit mechanism for passing arguments to upstream shaders.
So, for example, when writing a shader call for maya_projection, Mango looks for maya_projection_pre.gso first, writes a shader call for that before traversing the upstream connections, and finally writes the shader call for maya_projection.gso.
