Shadow Hearts' mix of old school gameplay with modern thinking is a welcome breath of fresh air.
Shadow Hearts also bestows upon you the title of Harmonixer, which gives you the power to fuse into over 20 different monsters at the drop of a hat.
Shadow Hearts' sub-quests are usually of the delivery boy type, although a few hunt and discover games are included as well.

Shadow Hearts Review for PlayStation 2 - Gaming Age   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-18)
Shadow Hearts sports a great theme and cast created in great depth and with great interest, as many of the more amateurish RPGs are, with a game stapled in somewhat haphazardly to provide justification for its existence.
Shadow Hearts, fortunately, has very little voice acting, and what is present is oddly split between Japanese (battle cries) and English (certain FMVs/cutscenes, and Margaret's specials).
Shadow Hearts is a slick once-through experience, with a novel theme and some great moments, but in the end it's just a very good rental.

Shadow Hearts: Covenant, here by referred to as Shadow Hearts 2 (sense all midway bothered to do was change the box cover's name), has you following Yuri and his entirely new band of adventurers as they uncover a game that surpasses its predecessor.
Normally a bestiary isn't a large factor of a RPG but Shadow Hearts 1's bestiary and setting were a big factor that helped set the game apart from the other RPGs.
Now Shadow Hearts 2 might not be on the same graphical polish as Final Fantasy X, and might not have a storyline as revered as Xenogears but Shadow Hearts 2 will provide you with a solid RPG experience that plays and feels great.

 RPGFan Reviews - Shadow Hearts
Shadow Hearts is a solid RPG that improves upon Koudelka in nearly every way possible.
At its core, Shadow Hearts is another typical 'band of adventurers save the world' game, complete with a hero who's unsure of himself and his powers, a young woman who loves him, and a supporting cast of characters who are all quirky but interesting.
While Shadow Hearts may not bring much in the way of innovation to the table, it does almost all of the core things a successful RPG has to do and does them right.

Shadow Hearts Covenant Review for PlayStation 2 - Gaming Age   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-18)
Although Covenant is a direct sequel to the original Shadow Hearts, this story still works on its own, and it even gives you enough of a recap throughout that you won't be lost.
And what an entertaining ride it is. At its heart lies a dark tale with demons and a dangerous religious cult, but on the surface there's some hilarious situations and laugh out loud funny dialog.
Honestly, as creepy and cool as the theme of the original Shadow Hearts was, the visuals were technically lacking.

Flame Bait Discussion: Shadow Hearts: Covenant
So yeah, to say I was eagerly anticipating Shadow Hearts II (aka Covenant) is a bit of an understatement, and being such an intimately-related sequel, to the point that it shares the same main character and references numerous events in the first game, it has a lot to live up to.
The first Shadow Hearts game was regarded as a sequel to Koudelka by some, though personally I thought of it as being more of a spin-off, but after finishing Shadow Hearts II I'd have to say that the two SH games are really their own series.
Gameplay-wise Shadow Hearts II is very polished, improving on the Judgement Ring system of the original to make it easier for novices to hit the strike areas while also offering alternatives for more adept players who wish to push their skill in exchange for the possibility of greater damage.

 Review - Shadow Hearts
Shadow Hearts takes place in an alternate early 1900s Europe that is poised upon the brink of World War I and is still in the grips of the Industrial Revolution.
Shadow Hearts starts out as the story of Yuri and Alice, two people linked by a mysterious voice they both seem to hear.
Shadow Hearts blends these two elements very well in their soundtrack by making sure there music isn't panic inducing or too "slasher-flick" sounding considering the more horror orientated themes in the game.

Review - Shadow Hearts: Covenant // PlayStation 2 /// Eurogamer
Shadow Hearts Covenant is the follow-up to one of the PS2's most sadly ignored RPG titles, the excellent Shadow Hearts, which followed the adventures of angsty hero Yuri as he mastered his ability to morph into the monstrous forms and fought off the Forces Of Darkness Threatening The World.
The combat system in Shadow Hearts is nothing if not traditional, and in fact it's almost refreshing to end up playing a turn-based RPG again after the action-focused likes of Star Ocean 3 and Tales of Symphonia.
The game also reintroduces the Judgement Ring from Shadow Hearts, which requires you to tap the X button at the right moments to ensure that an attack is triggered and to determine its power.

 Shadow Hearts - Retroview
Musically speaking, Shadow Hearts is easily light-years ahead of its predecessor, with some nice tunes appropriately fitting the dark atmosphere of the game, not to mention some catchy ethnic pieces such as that played in Shanghai and on the title screen; few moments of silent dot the game, I should mention.
Sprites, moreover, are tall and proportionate, though shadows are poor, and hair is mostly stiff.
Overall, Shadow Hearts is an effective sequel, what with all its aspects, primarily its battle system, being solid despite some small flaws.

Because of this, Shadow Hearts did eventually find an audience (almost entirely through word of mouth) and has since become one of the cult classic RPGs of the PS2 era.

Shadow Hearts offers the kind of satisfying gaming experience that is simply not present in very many recent adventure releases.
Shadow Hearts is in turn tragic and comic, deeply philosophical and completely fluffy, and overall a great gaming experience that I was sorry to see come to an end.

Unlike Silent Hill, Shadow Hearts ignores subtlety in favor of continuous action and player interaction, succeeding in an offbeat and fun game.
There's no mysterious fog or other attempts to surprise here; Shadow Hearts is about as blunt as having your evening dinner interrupted by a rotten corpse falling onto your table.
Shadow Hearts doesn't seem like it should be as fun a game as it is. There's little minutia for players to be engrossed in; if not for its difficulty and enjoyability, Shadow Hearts could be considered "RPG lite." But its unique setting and genuinely likable characters make for a bright choice among PlayStation 2 RPGs.

However, 3 years later, Shadow Hearts II (known as Shadow Hearts: Covenant in the US) is here, and again, Midway has handled the publication of the Nautilus (a revamped Sacnoth) developed RPG, taking yet another risk.
At its heart, Shadow Hearts II is a traditional, turn-based RPG – a different feel with all the real-time RPG’s floating around.
One of the flaws that hampered the original Shadow Hearts was its graphics – because it was a PSone game at the start, it didn’t use the PS2 much aside from improved character textures and pre-rendered backgrounds.

Shadow Hearts Review - PlayStation 2
One of the final RPGs to come out for the PS2 system before the end of 2001, Shadow Hearts was released to appeal to the more "shadowy" side of the gaming crowd, with a sinister Victorian look with an unusual Eastern flair not often seen in such "horror" themed titles.
Shadow Hearts does so many new and wonderful things, but combines it with some tedious and mundane things, making it really hard to call in a review.
The concept of Shadow Hearts is certainly a step apart from many other RPG titles with a darker theme.

Midway and Nautilus's Shadow Hearts: Covenant set for a late September release will whip you back to the early part of last century where you'll once again get to take on all forms of evil as the shape-shifting Yuri.
The original Shadow Hearts had the misfortune of coming out a week before the stellar Final Fantasy X back in December of 2001.
