Shadow of a Doubt (1943)   (Site not responding. Last check: )
"Shadow of a Doubt" is one of Alfred Hitchcock's most brilliant and most carefully-constructed films, and is further notable as one of the very finest performances of Joseph Cotten, in his role as "Uncle Charlie".
"Shadow of a Doubt" is less known and celebrated than Hitchcock's 50's and early 60's work, and even than some of his 30's British films, most probably because it does not contain any of the director's famous set pieces, which were already a part of his pictures well before "Shadow of a Doubt" was made.
But what "Shadow of a Doubt" lacks in the spectacular it makes up in tension and characterization, especially in Cotten's brilliant performance.

Shadow's anger at his brother, his parents' struggles to cope with the sudden return of their son, and Daniel's own feelings of guilt create an emotional undertow that threatens to consume the family once again.
Shadow's anger at Daniel rings true; so does his anger at his parents, who have their own difficulties with Daniel's return and with the murder trial that he faces.
Shadow's dilemmas and changing perspective are realistically portrayed, as are his vacillating feelings, from resentment to confusion.

Way Beyond the Shadow of a Doubt
A shortage of doubt also drives the carnage wrought by religious and political extremists around the world, people who are so certain about their cause that they recognize no limit on how they make it come true.
Once doubt is banished from political discourse — once it becomes impossible to admit that the other guy might have a point — you get two sides entrenched in their position, such as the French and German armies in World War I, slugging it out at great cost for mere yards of territory.
Doubt is the seed that makes us think that maybe things could be better; certainty is the boot that crushes that seed.

Half a year later, however, this shadow government is still in place and has generated controversy as to whether its expense, or even its existence, is justified.
But this shadow government, known internally as COG for "continuity of government," has many obstacles to overcome before it proves to be effective.
Where the shadow government might result in overkill is the number of bureaucrats stationed around the clock in secret government bunkers.

Shadow of a Doubt (1943) at Reel Classics   (Site not responding. Last check: )
Arguably Alfred Hitchcock's best film and Teresa Wright's best performance, SHADOW OF A DOUBT (1943) is a low-key thriller about a murderer who comes to live with his sister's family in "peaceful, quiet Santa Rosa" in an effort to elude the police, and his young niece who finds him out.
Filmed primarily on location in Santa Rosa, California, SHADOW OF A DOUBT is often regarded as Hitchcock's first truly "American" movie, and his success in creating a credible small-town atmosphere populated by "typical American" characters makes the evil which intrudes upon this sunny utopia all the more frightening.
Though it was only her fourth film, Teresa Wright received top billing in SHADOW OF A DOUBT, and her performance demonstrates that she was worthy of the honor.

More thsn once did Alfred Hitchcock say that his 1943 film "Shadow Of A Doubt" was his personal favorite out of all his films.
"Shadow Of A Doubt" defines Hitcock perfectly: drak, creepy, filled with fl humor and more than twists and turns that a state intersection.
It's not the masterpiece that "Vertigo, "North By Northwest" and "Psycho" are, but "Shadow Of A Doubt" is in the upper echelon of Hitchcock movies.

Having just watched Alfred Hitchcock's Shadow of a Doubt (1943) last night for the first time, I was surprised at how good it was, and why I've never seen it before.
SHADOW OF A DOUBT is a superb film and an excellent place to begin for anyone who really wants to deepen their understanding of Hitchcock's film art.
(Please note the great, monstrous shadow that falls across the little boy when the train carrying Charles pulls into the station.) Then the bulk of the film is the slow awful realizing by Charlie that her darling Uncle is not what she thinks he is but, in fact, a walking nightmare.

Shadow of a doubt lacks the big scenes and stars of other Hitch films, but that's the point.
Cotton and Wright are great in their roles but the story of "Shadow of the Doubt" is just too generic to be memorable.
In fact, precious little contributes to the entertainment value of "Shadow of a Doubt" - the pacing drags, the detectives in the film are too simple-minded to be credible, the romantic subplot with the female Charlie feels manufactured, and any suspense involving the identity of the serial killer is gutted immediately at the film's outset.

The DVD Journal | Quick Reviews: Shadow of a Doubt
Shadow of a Doubt (1943) is widely known as Alfred Hitchcock's own favorite film, and for one reason — it effectively melds the concepts of evil and innocence, the notions of shared consciousness between competing forces, and the theme of menace lurking beneath an idyllic portrait of America.
It is when a detective (Macdonald Carey) informs Charlie that her uncle may be the "Merry Widow Murderer" — a man with three killings to his credit and a nationwide manhunt on his trail — that Charlie begins to believe the worst.
Universal's DVD release of Shadow of Doubt offers a clean full-frame transfer (1.33:1) from a print that has noticeable flecking (although the worst of it is in the first two reels), while sharpness and low-contrast details are pleasant.

For some reason, Shadow was surprised to see the look of intense concern in her eyes, and he forgot the cool, ambiguous answers he had come up with to tell Gadget on the way to her house.
Shadow knew she was too angry for words, and was almost afraid that she'd spit on him, or slap him.
Shadow and Gadget weren't in it, though, and when Mittens finally regained her wits, they were nowhere to be seen.
