The Thin Man series is so different than the majority of comedy films these days that rely on cliches or worse yet, cheap gross humor to get a laugh.
In this case, "little" is Dashiell Hammett's classic detective novel "The Thin Man," a gritty detective story about a pair of married society sleuths, the legendary Nick and Nora Charles.
Watching the "Thin Man" series is like taking a trip back in time, to the high society of the 1930s, and staying with the wittiest pair of sophisticates imaginable.

MGM was not entirely enthusiastic about 1934's THE THIN MAN and even less so about the casting of Myrna Loy as Nora Charles--and director W.S. "Woody" Van Dyke was determined to have her the studio gave in with poor grace.
Directed by Richard Thorpe, the 1945 THE THIN MAN GOES HOME suffered from an incredibly weak script; although the film is amusing in its way it is a clinker in comparison with the other films in the series.
A Lux Radio version of THE THIN MAN is entertaining, but it needs a significant remaster, and an episode from the later television series based on the films can only be described as fairly dire.

The DVD Journal | Quick Reviews: Shadow of the Thin Man
The fourth film in the Thin Man series starring William Powell and Myrna Loy, Shadow of the Thin Man (1941) is a little worn in places as the premise begins to feel a tad, well… thin.
Shadow was eagerly welcomed, coming two years after the previous outing and hitting theaters just two weeks before the attack on Pearl Harbor.
Warner's DVD release of Shadow of the Thin Man, part of the seven-disc "Thin Man Collection," is not a remastered edition, but given the age of the source prints, it's remarkably clean with a minimal amount of specks and scratches, with more noticeable wear towards the end of the film.

The Thin Man - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Thin Man is the title of the first of six comic detective films starring William Powell and Myrna Loy as Nick and Nora Charles, a hard-drinking and flirtatious married couple who banter wittily as they easily solve crimes.
Also appearing in the film were Maureen O'Sullivan, Nat Pendleton, Minna Gombell, Cesar Romero, Porter Hall, Henry Wadsworth, William Henry, Harold Huber and Natalie Moorhead.
The "Thin Man" of the title was actually the murder victim, but the name was thought by virtually everyone to refer to Nick Charles, and it was used in the titles of the sequels, although no one ever called him that.

The most fun and sophisticated series in the history of film continued with Maj. W.S. Van Dyke's 1941 entry, Shadow of the Thin Man. William Powell was back, of course, as Dashiell Hammett's greatest creation, Nick Charles.
But the Thin Man films were always about how much fun the audience could have watching Nick and Nora interact as she pushed Nick into action, drink in hand.
Some have criticized SHADOW as being far removed from the Hammett ethos, and some have admitted inability to follow the byzantine gangland and raceland plot.

The Thin Man, Dashiell Hammett's classic tale of murder in Manhattan, became the popular movie series with William Powell and Myrna Loy, and both the movies and the novel continue to captivate new generations of fans.
The Thin Man is more of a "Who Dunnit?" romp that deals with the collection of dysfunctional folks who have ties with the disappearance and the murder.
The last of Dashiell Hammett's novels was "The Thin Man," and what a last novel it is. A hard-edged whodunnit, Hammett's writing had become very polished and his characters even more intricate by the time he wrote this, and while it's not the best he had written, it's a solid example of his work.

Not surprisingly, "The Thin Man" is the best in the series, although the second film, "Another Thin Man", which was also written by Hackett and Aldrich, comes very close to being as good.
This movie, as do all the subsequent "Thin Man" installments, (there are an additional 5 - none of which are currently available on DVD)relies heavily on the chemistry generated between Loy, Powell and their wire-haired terrier, Asta.

The Thin Man (1934) is the first installment of a popular series of films casting a sophisticated, glamorous, pleasure-seeking, and urbane husband-wife detective team (William Powell and Myrna Loy as Nick and Nora Charles).
The husband and wife team (billed as "the happiest married couple in radio") was also broadcast on radio (by Pabst Blue Ribbon) for many years, with Claudia Morgan in the role of Nora, and a number of actors in Nick's role (Lester Damon, Les Tremayne, Joseph Curtin, and David Gothard).
As the film opens, an eccentric, tall, wealthy businessman/inventor named Clyde Wynant (Edward Ellis) - the "thin man" of the film title, is in his inventor's workshop - viewed first as a silhouette cast on a wall.

Val Lewton's name is synonymous with the subtlest, most mysterious brand of horror filmmaking in Hollywood's golden age, and the nine horror classics he produced at RKO between 1942 and 1946 constitute the most remarkable cycle of creativity in B-movie history.
The title is so lurid that the heroine-narrator (Frances Dee) must shrug it off with her very first words, yet the movie is an amazingly delicate and poetic piece of spellbinding--nothing less than a reworking of Jane Eyre on a voodoo island in the Caribbean.

THE THIN MAN is a landmark film in so many ways that it is difficult to over-estimate either its impact or its brilliance.
Although Powell and Loy made numerous films together, including five sequels to this one, THE THIN MAN shows them at their zenith, and I can think of no other screen couple to date who have played so effectively together.
Regrettably, the DVD release has not been restored, and although the print is crisp it does contain a number of blemishes; similarly, although the DVD does include trailers for all of the "Thin Man" films Powell and Loy made, the bonus features hardly do justice to the film's inexhaustible charms.

The stillness of that approach only amplifies the mounting unease Chamberlain's character, David Burton, feels as he steps for the first time beyond the bland safety of his privileged life and into the mystical world of the native Australians.
Taking on the defense of the aborigines suspected of murdering the drowned man through tribal magic, his own beliefs are tested by the suspects' evident, intuitive connections to nature.
Chamberlain's Anglicized performance seems fussy and epicene, which only heightens the quiet intensity and watchful grace conveyed by the two aborigines, Chris Lee (David Gulpilil) and the shaman, Charlie (Nandjiwarra Amagula), who give Burton his first glimpse of their culture's 'dreamtime' and the potent symbolism it contains.
