Shadow of the Vampire: Cinephiles Movie Review
Shadow of the Vampire does not pretend to be a documentary; it is a highly stylized, fictional work that delves into its very own imaginative speculations about a filmmaker's creative process.
Shadow of the Vampire stems from the premise that its protagonist, the fictional Murnau (Malkovich), must hire a real vampire in order to ensure a truly authentic representation of the vampire character, "Count Orlock", for his film Nosferatu.
However, Shadow of the Vampire integrates the humorous premise to its metaphorical exploration of the artistic process and of the inevitable struggle between the star, the director and the crew.

Shadow of the Vampire's cinematography is definitely a point of interest.
Most of Shadow of the Vampire is in color (albeit, at times, hues are desaturated), but many of the Nosferatu sequences are presented in fl-and-white.

Shadow of the Vampire is director Merhige's second feature and as such is astonishingly impressive, for this homage to Murnau's German expressionist filmmaking in its heyday is remarkably effective at conveying the heady atmosphere of the times and in recreating the extraordinary iconic images that have inspired so many filmmakers down to the present day.
Shadow succeeds in using macabre dark humor to communicate its conceit about suffering in the name of True Art thanks to superb performances -- especially that of Dafoe as the oddly sympathetic vampire.
Merhige is particularly skillful at marshaling a wide array of visual trickery to imply the vampiric nature of film itself by letting the color bleed out of the backstage madness into the reverential fl-and-white recreations of Nosferatu and then juxtaposing them with bits of actual footage from the classic itself.

Whether or not the whole is as satisfying as its parts, one thing is certain about Shadow of the Vampire — the conversation between Schreck and two of Murnau's men, recounting the vampire's reaction to reading Bram Stoker's novel, is one of the great scenes in all of vampire cinema.

SPLICEDwire | "Shadow of the Vampire" review (2000)
Part homage to one of cinema's best-known silent films, part winkingly nebulous fl comedy, and part old-school horror flick, "Shadow of the Vampire" is a crafty "what if" fictionalization of the making of "Nosferatu," the world's first vampire movie.
Enter Willem Dafoe in a performance of a lifetime as Max Schreck -- the method actor who never appeared to the cast and crew out of character (or out of make-up, or during daylight) the whole time "Nosferatu" was being made on location at a foreboding castle in Bavaria, circa 1922.
But in the mythology of "Shadow," Schreck isn't a method actor at all -- he's a bona fide bloodsucker with whom Murnau cut a diabolical deal for the sake of creating an absurd level of authenticity.
