Shadowrun - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Shadowrun was developed and published by FASA Corporation from 1989 until early 2001, when FASA closed its doors and the property was sold to WizKids who licenses the RPG rights to the current publisher, Fantasy Productions (also known as FanPro, also responsible for the German version).
Characters in Shadowrun can be humans, orks, trolls, elves and dwarves, as well as certain diverging subspecies (known as metavariants) such as gnomes, giants, minotaurs, et cetera.
Since Shadowrun pre-dates the movie The Matrix, it seems obvious that the Wachowski brothers were at least influenced by the setting, originally based on ideas by William Gibson and the cyberpunk literary genre.

There is also a somewhat more updated version of the same timeline available, which comes packaged as both a very large Zip file and an even larger text file, as well as a simple HTML version called the James Dixon Timeline, but the latter has not been updated since May of 1994.
The Timeline of the Highlander Universe compiled by I. Marc Carlson is a catch-all chronology which takes information from the series, the movies, the novels, and even the work of other online historians of things that never were in an attempt to fit it all together in a (somewhat) logical sequence.
The Captain Power Timeline, by Rebecca Lovett, is a good guide to events in the series itself, and it has an explanation for the uninitiated of the dating system, but it seems a little bare in general.

Prior to the start of the campaign, the characters were members of an up-and-coming shadowrunning team, finally graduating from smash and grabs, hired muscle, and bounty hunting to their first real shadowruns against corporate targets.
Players should be familiar with the events of the Shadowrun timeline up to the present (late September 2061).
The timeline provided at the official Shadowrun site here will bring the players up to date on everything up to 2060.

Shadowrun is now under new leadership, and I'm looking forward to what lies ahead.
With the Shadowrun timeline now set at roughly realtime+60 years (it was 61 years during FASA's time) YOTC can now appear to be on time.
Your characters may be trying to scrape by in their corner of the sprawl, but the world is a big and active place; events happen outside of the characters' control, and they have a very real chance of affecting the character.

The Shadowrun future is a cyberpunk setting, and one of the common features of such settings is the dominance of corporations of sovereign national governments.
The rise of corporate sovereignty is one of the most believable elements of the timeline, with a few well-meaning legal decisions here and there leading to a handful of companies becoming more powerful than geographic nations.
While our timeline has already diverged from the fictional Shadowrun timeline, some events in the real world seem to be leading down the same path.

Timelines in Published Settings - Treasure Tables
With the Forgotten Realms, the timeline is advanced not only by game books, but also by novels — and the advances are often pretty large jumps.
On top of that, the timeline advances through each of the WoD game lines — Vampire, Mage, Werewolf, etc. (this may not be true in the latest edition).
Particularly in Hârn’s case, I’d imagine that the concept of a static timeline would be an active encouragement for a GM to take the setting in her own direction.

Because it's from the perspective of a Shadowrunner, it's somewhat propagandic but is the canon history of Shadowrun.
It's notable that Shadowrun's combat system is designed to mimic real life in that the player should be able to do anything they can imagine doing in such a situation rather than being limited to attack, cast, evade or some such limitation.

This is also, to my knowledge, the first attempt to reconcile the timelines from all three editions of Shadowrun into a single, flowing series of events.
I freely admit, some events may be out of order for each year, as not every event included a day and month of the year, but I feel those that are out of order won't effect the quality of the finished product.
Also, I freely admit this is a "work in progress" since the Shadowrun Timeline is still going strong.

If I were running Shadowrun using d20 modern/Urban Arcana, I'd create two new advanced classes, the Shaman and the Mage, and at least a few prestige classes (The Adept, the Toxic Shaman, the Initiate, and maybe a few more) to try and model the complexity and depth of the SR magical model.
