Neverwinter Nights: Shadows of Undrentide for PC Review - PC Neverwinter Nights: Shadows of Undrentide Review
Shadows of Undrentide isn't the most epic or memorable RPG with BioWare's name on it, but it's got plenty of good, new content to satisfy most any Neverwinter Nights fan.
While Shadows of Undrentide doesn't fix the shortcomings of Neverwinter Nights' Aurora engine (which isn't aging as well as BioWare's Infinity engine, which was used for five years' worth of great RPGs), this expansion features a good-sized original campaign and makes a few noteworthy additions to the gameplay of the original.
Shadows of Undrentide isn't a conventional expansion pack, because it's not a continuation of the previous game.

Shadows of Undrentide possesses a story that is much more engulfing and interesting than found in the first Neverwinter Nights.
Shadows of Undrentide seems to pay more attention to the small details that help to enhance a game's atmosphere.
Shadows of Undrentide has the same music and sound effects available that were found in the first official campaign, albeit with a few additions.

Neverwinter Nights: Shadows of Undrentide - Reviews - Stratos Group
Shadows of Undrentide, the first of two expansions for Neverwinter Nights, has managed not only to give NWN fans a truly high-quality professional campaign to match the scale of the original campaign, but provide the community with lots of new toys to play with at the same time.
The core of Shadows of Undrentide is its new campaign, which puts you in the feet of one of the students of Drogan, the master and teacher of an adventurer's school located in the remote town of Hilltop.
Shadows of Undrentide is almost everything I thought the original NWN campaign wasn't.

RPGnet: Review of Shadows of Undrentide
Therefore, when Bioware announced that they would be releasing Shadows of Undrentide (SoU) as an expansion to NWN, I was both interested and leery at the same time.
I recently finished playing through the SoU campaign - which is not a continuation of the official campaign from NWN - and am here to report that it was a whole lot of fun.
SoU has several new features which have been exhaustively detailed elsewhere (including at the official site), so I will just mention a couple of them here.

 WORTHPLAYING - - All about games !
Shadows of Undrentide, developed by both Bioware and Floodgate entertainment, is the first such offering, and features a new module, complete with original story, characters, and areas.
For example, one of the main henchmen in Shadows is a dwarf by the name of Dora Trapspringer, who is a dual class rogue cleric.
Quickly, I will also add that, at the same time Shadows of Undrentide was announced, Bioware also mentioned a second expansion pack for Neverwinter Nights, which was being developed internally.

ToTheGame - Review of Neverwinter Nights: Shadows of Undrentide (PC)
Undrentide begins within the frozen wilds of the Silver Marches, where you and a few other students seek out the wisdom of a wise and revered Master Drogan.
The basic premise with Undrentide, as it was in Neverwinter, is to follow one main quest and letting the side quests trickle down beside it.
When you’re playing Undrentide, the point is to immerse yourself in the story, the music and voice acting do their job with precision.

Shadows hadn't really managed to captivate me before, and it didn't do much better this time, but I pushed myself on through it.

Speaking of the combat -- I have to say that the combat in Shadows was terribly unbalanced.

At the beginning of the quest, it feels like "Shadows of Undrentide" is going to fall into the same trap as the dreaded first chapter in the original "Neverwinter Nights" campaign.
In "Shadows of Undrentide," everything from the treasure placement to the layout of each area feels lovingly crafted.
"Shadows of Undrentide" adds three new tilesets (arctic, ruins, and desert) and several new wizards to help you get the most out of the tools.

Neverwinter Nights: Shadows of Undrentide > Review
The story to the Shadows of Undrentide campaign is strong, except that it still casts you in the role of an initiate to adventuring, a pupil just starting out.
One welcome expansion aspect of Shadows of Undrentide is the addition of several more wizard-based programming shortcuts into the Aurora Toolset.
In the end, Shadows of Undrentide is still a must-have extension to the Neverwinter Nights experience, but leaves a lot to be desired in terms of delivering as much of an expansion as most consumers will feel they deserve for their $30.

The developers, however, have a few tricks up their sleeve that their enthusiastic fan community doesn't: Shadows of Undrentide features not only an entire single-player quest, but also four new character classes, a grimoire of unseen spells, and a cohort of fresh villains to meet in battle.
First things first, Undrentide is designed to be embarked upon by beginner characters, set as it is in a place distant from the original game's action.
The Silver Marches are a wild place, far from the shadows of Neverwinter's spires, but they are home to Master Drognan, a retired dwarf lacking his former drive for riches and adventure.

The campaign in Shadows of Undrentide starts off in the snowy north of Faerûn (all the better to show off the new rural winter tileset).
It was smart of BioWare to leapfrog characters to level three in the Neverwinter Nights campaign, but in Shadows of Undrentide, not only do you have to play those first two levels, you have to do it without any sort of useful equipment.
So, overall, my thoughts on Shadows of Undrentide are about the same as my thoughts on Neverwinter Nights: it’s pretty good as a toolkit, but it’s only mediocre for professionally made campaigns.

SoU also adds various game play additions, such as new feats, spells and character classes, plus the ability to manipulate your henchman's inventory--a feature sorely lacking in the original game.
Shadows of Undrentide likewise would have stood well on its own.
Pros: SoU adds a lot of content to NWN The single-player campaign was shorter in SoU, but the story was much richer Many user-made modules to play Cons: Can't view movies in either NWN or SoU - this can be very disappointing when you reach the end of a campaign!!

This shows itself in the dialogues when you talk to them (or when they talk to you) or they interfere in conversations (and not just to be ignored, I might add, as opposed to the earlier BG games where the conversation just continued).

SOU is perhaps the funniest fantasy-RPG I've ever played...
Undrentide’s additions bring new life to a flagging game, and though its story isn’t much to write home about, it’ll certainly tide us over until Bioware’s next magnum opus, "Knights of the Old Republic."
SOU adds so many new feats and spells, along with the new PRCs (prestige classes), that it's like playing a whole new game.

The Jaded Gamer > Reviews > PC > "Neverwinter Nights: Shadows of Undrentide"
I mentioned in my earlier review of Neverwinter Nights that it is a game best suited for multi-player, and I have to say that the Shadows of Undrentide expansion just drives that statement home further.
So much so that anyone not interested in playing the game online or designing their own modules may well want to steer clear of this expansion.
While it's true that the "Official Campaign" that comes with the expansion is quite a bit more polished and enjoyable than the one that was included with the original Neverwinter Nights, if all you want is a quality new adventure to play, there are already plenty of them freely available on the internet.

Neverwinter Nights: Shadows of Undrentide Review
For what it's worth, Shadows of Undrentide draws players into a campaign that's enwrapped in a classic fantasy tale, which incidentally has more of a flow to it than the original.
In the end, we mustn't leave out that Shadows of Undrentide also includes an updated Aurora toolset that has several nifty new features for the vast mod making crowd.
I was also happy to discover that Shadows of Undrentide possesses the same degree of replay value as the original game.

Judging by the number of users on Bioware's forums that have registered both the original and Shadows of Undrentide it seems that there's a third, more definite possibility.
While the plot invites feelings of deja-vu there's an interesting interlude after chapter one and a plot twist in chapter two that is not only a surprise but makes for a pleasingly different adventuring dynamic.
Whereas in SoU, I acutally felt like I was getting somewhere and somehow it just felt like it was less linear while being more story driven at the same time.
