 Shaft (2000)
To an extent, this film is pro-cops (nothing wrong with that, but it seems an odd position for a fl filmmaker to take in a season when the NYPD is under fire for shooting an unarmed fl man 41 times).
In fact, this film seems to advocate removing some of the limits we place on the police, particularly when it comes to the use of violence: Shaft is more effective after he quits the police because he can use violence with impugnity.
Shaft could have saved a bunch of effort, a bunch of lives, and a bunch of property damage if he had just shot the bad guy at the outset--but, of course, he's the hero.

Otherwise, this "Shaft" is Singleton's alone, inlaid with touches of gritty violence that feel reminiscent of his "Boyz N The Hood." But knowing Singleton's rep as one unafraid to show the face of inner city crime this isn't too surprising.
Here's the spaghetti bowl of a premise: Shaft (Jackson) is a maverick (surprise) NYPD detective sheltering an eyewitness (Toni Collette of "The Sixth Sense") to a violent murder committed by one Walter Wade, Jr., (Christian Bale).

 SHAFT (2000) - DVD
The original Shaft took it as a given that its hero was on the wrong side of the racial divide, and his exploits as a fl man in a white man's world were transgressive simply because he did what he chose and didn't care who knew it.
The current film sacrifices this virtue by chaining him to a specific incident and a specific group of people; ironically, the desire to right a white-on-fl wrong is what keeps the film from grasping beyond a certain level.
Worst of all, the ending of the film does nothing less than render the rest of the film completely redundant, making all of the hard work and danger come to naught as the satisfaction of seeing the villain stand trial is wiped away in a matter of seconds.

Shaft (2000) is about average action thriller fare, replete with violent death at every turn, explosions, car chases and plenty of hard-assed one-liners.

The Films of John Singleton: Shaft (2000)
The reason for this is the same one that explains the film's connection with moviegoers far beyond the target African-American audience: the title character of John Shaft.
This fact also explains why John Singleton's Y2G revival of John Shaft is as enjoyable as it is. Much like the film that started the franchise, this Shaft's plot doesn't score points in the originality department, but the energy level and smooth attitude distinguishes it from standard crime thrillers.
However, the focus of the film lies on his same-named nephew (Samuel L. Jackson), who, as the film begins, is a cop whose take-no-crap demeanor constantly leaves him at odds with his superiors.

 Shaft
The 2000 film Shaft starring Samuel L. Jackson as John Shaft, a New York City cop turned rogue after the legal system failed to appropriately prosecute a white man guilty of a racial murder is, by itself, a decent flick.
In this Shaft, I found Christian Bale and Jeffrey Wright’s performances as the major villains to be believable, as was the New York City setting, and Hip Hop artist Busta Rhymes surprised me with a remarkable acting performance that I hadn't expected.
Despite such a ground-breaking portrayal of Shaft by Richard Roundtree in 1971, his presence and impact on Shaft (2000) was minimal because he didn't just age thirty years, he forgot how to be Shaft after thirty years.

SHAFT had potential, but Singleton’s rendering simply suffers from all the same flaws that most Hollywood blockbusters do - a lame script that doesn’t stop pulling on the plot clichés for a second.

The list is designed to reflect the full breadth and diversity of America's film heritage, thus increasing public awareness of the richness of American cinema and the need for its preservation.
And, ominously, more films are lost each year -- through the ravages of nitrate deterioration, color-fading and the recently discovered 'vinegar syndrome,' which threatens the acetate-based (safety) film stock on which the vast majority of motion pictures, past and present, have been preserved," said Dr. Billington.
For each title named to the Registry, the Library of Congress works to ensure that the film is preserved for all time, either through the Library's massive motion picture preservation program at Dayton, Ohio, or through collaborative ventures with other archives, motion picture studios, and independent filmmakers.

Actually, for continuity with the original series of Shaft movies (1971's Shaft, Shaft's Big Score in '72, and Shaft in Africa in '73), Jackson plays the nephew of the first Detective John Shaft, portrayed by Richard Roundtree in the original films as well as in this one.
