 Shaft (2000): Reviews
The new movie, like its predecessor, is a crime thriller with a moral viewpoint, an eye and ear for street color and a taste for macho movie fantasy.
The movie's primary narrative weakness is that its racism plot points seem ripped from the headlines of a "Geraldo" newsletter and stretched into a string of terribly executed car chases.
Shaft is a decent popcorn movie and Jackson rises to the responsibility of appearing bigger than life.

SHAFT isn't that far removed from the original in that it was relatively small in scope, dealing with two-bit thugs fighting over who gets to be the big fish in the pond.
In this we have Det. John Shaft investigating the killing of a young fl man seemingly at the hands of a punk rich white kid, and who uses his daddy's vast wealth and power as a judge to hide behind the law.
SHAFT does come close to being as entertaining as the original, and does have it's moments every once in a while, but for the most part it just is too pedestrian to take things to a llevel of genuine excitement.

That's certainly a strong opening going against three other movies; maybe not a true blockbuster opening (that would've been $25 or more), but I'm guessing this will be strong enough for Paramount to announce their sequel plans soon (around which time, a preview page for Shaft 2 should be posted).
Shaft is about "owning the streets", but that's something he does not just through violence, but all parts of his being; including his libido.

Strip the movie of its brand name, mute the Isaac Hayes theme song that's still icebox cool, and John Singleton's Shaft doesn't even qualify as a distant cousin to Gordon Parks' 1971 original--much less Ernest Tidyman's 1970 novel, on which the franchise is based.
But Shaft, on the scene, can't help but notice the blood on Walter's hand; the audience, in turn, can't help but notice the lawn jockey over Shaft's shoulder (a rare sly moment).
Fact is, Roundtree could probably make a viable Shaft even now: At 57, he's only six years older than Jackson, and he exudes a calm, knowing cool in the few seconds he does get on screen.

Unlike the earlier film, Jackson's Shaft doesn't flirt with too many women (an issue that was argued about during production) and mainly just keeps it going with the action sequences as Jackson is the baddest of the bad, intimidating and funny at the same time.
If you're already a fan of this update of the movie, it's worth picking up on DVD as although Paramount hasn't provided a great amount of extras, the audio/video quality is very good.
