		This research established that there was a wide variety of tomb forms, but at their most basic the tombs consisted of a vertical shaft of varying depth (.5 to 20 meters) and one or more chambers either at the bottom or more often excavated off to the side.
		The 1970s ushered in a period of more focused excavations of intact shaft tombs at Tabachines in the Atemajac valley, at El Openo in northwestern Michoacan, and later in the Sayula Basin, in the Bolanos Canyon of northern Jalisco, along the coast of Jalisco, and in the central Tequila valleys.
		Current interpretations tend to emphasize the diversity of shaft tombs and their associated offerings, and the notion of a shaft tomb culture is being largely dropped, but few have stepped forward to suggest a more social interpretation to replace it.

		Excavation of the shaft tomb situated to the south-east from the shaft tomb of Udjahorresnet in the southwestern sector of the Abusir necropolis, began in January 1995.
		The mouth of a small shaft, measuring about 1.7 x 1.4 in and the upper part lined by mud brick, was discovered under the limestone plastering lying in front of the larger niche in the western outer face of the mud brick enclosure wall surrounding the main shaft of the tomb.
		However, this initial opening of the intact tomb was not announced to the public due to fear of tomb robbers known to this area, although the area was well guarded by police to safeguard the safety of the contents of the tomb.

	Shaft Tombs, Saqqara
		On the south side of the Pyramid of Unas are three shaft tombs of the Persian period, all broadly similar in layout.
		A square vertical shaft descends to the tomb chamber, constructed of stone blocks, at the foot of a larger shaft sunk during the building of the chamber and later filled in.

	The Ancient Egypt Site - The Memphite Tomb of Horemheb
		Shafts ii and iii, which may perhaps be of Late Dynastic date and part of some intrusive burials in the temple, are located on either side of the Offering Room.
		Shaft iv had originally been prepared for the burial of Horemheb and his first wife, the lady Amenia, whose name was found in the tombs superstructure.
		Part of the original blocking, intended to seal of the tomb, was still in place when it was discovered in 1977, but it had not prevented tomb robbers from finding their way to the treasures and riches once contained in the tomb.

	Tombs in Ancient Egypt
		Although more sophisticated tombs would appear later in the dynastic periods, this simple pit grave would continue to be used for the burials of the lower classes.
		These type of tombs first appear in the Predynastic period when they were used to protect the burial of Kings (the form of the mastaba at this time were limited to oblong heaps of stone which would cover the grave).

	Analysis of the Plugs Found in the Queen's Chamber Southern Shaft
		Now Rudolf Gantenbrink, the original discoverer of the first 'door' in the Queen's chamber shaft, has come forward and suggested that what might eventually be found at the end of this shaft is the burial chamber of Hetepheres, the mother of Khufu.
		What we now know of the Queen's chamber shaft design from this most recent exploration by the National Geographic team is that the 'Gantenbrink Door' that was drilled through was measured to be a fraction less than 8 cm thick.
		Instead, we would find that the shaft continues beyond this second closure stone just as the King's chamber shaft continues beyond its own double set of niches, niches that were probably designed to hold slabs like those in the Queen's chamber southern shaft.

		True shaft graves of the type found in Grave Circles A and B at Mycenae are relatively rare on the Greek Mainland.
		A shaft grave found at Ayios Stephanos (Laconia) in 1977 also dates to the late MH period but was poorly furnished, containing nothing more than the extended corpse of the deceased.
		Shaft graves may be roofed by timbers, reeds or twigs, and waterproofing clay or simply by large flat slabs.

		The change from a rough local limestone shaft to a nicely polished Tura limestone as the QC south shaft approaches the area of the slabs.
		The placement of a similar chamber close to the casing in Khufu's main pyramid, as hypothesized by both Hawass and Gantenbrink would perhaps stand a better chance of not being robbed as it is positioned high on the pyramid's smooth face rather than near the ground.
