In 1963, EMI bought the theatre and changed its name to the Shaftesbury Theatre.
The theatre almost fell victim to redevelopment, but a campaign by Equity succeeded in having the theatre placed on the Statutory List of Buildings of Special architectural or Historic Interest.

Shaftesbury Avenue is a major London street, named after Anthony Ashley Cooper, 7th Earl of Shaftesbury, that runs in a north-easterly direction from Piccadilly Circus to New Oxford Street, crossing Charing Cross Road at Cambridge Circus.
Shaftesbury Avenue was created in the late 19th Century to improve traffic flow.
It is generally considered the heart of London's West End theatre district, with the Lyric, Apollo, Gielgud and Queen's theatres clustered together on the north side of the road between Piccadilly Circus and Charing Cross Road.

It was renamed again in 1963 to the Shaftesbury Theatre which it still is today (not to be confused with the original Shaftesbury Theatre on Shaftesbury Avenue.)
The Theatre looked like it was to be closed for good and demolished but was saved by listing and the endeavors of the Save London's Theatres Campaign who fought long and hard for its survival.

Beginning in 1911 as the New Princes Theatre it became the Princes in 1914, and renamed the Shaftesbury in 1962 following redecoration.
In 1978 the theatre was bought by the newly formed Theatre of Comedy company founded by Ray Cooney, and given its official name of the Shaftesbury Theatre of Comedy.
The theatre was forced to close again in 1973 when part of the auditorium roof fell in just as the musical Hair was about to celebrate its 2000th performance.

Brought to the screen in 1956 with a top-notch cast featuring Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra and Grace Kelly, High Society tells the story of rich girl Tracy Lord and her three very different suitors: working class fiancé George Kittredge, ex-husband C.K. Dexter Haven and 'undercover' journo Mike Collins.
This works reasonably well and it's the small reactions of some of these servants that provide the humour curiously lacking from so many of the scenes.
This arrives at the Shaftesbury after a successful run at the Open Air Theatre but what passed muster on a warm summer night in Regent's Park doesn't really cut it here.
