South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands (SGSSI) is an overseas territory of the United Kingdom in the southern Atlantic Ocean.
South Georgia and its associated islands, which consist of the island of South Georgia Island, which is by far the largest island in the territory, the islands that immediately surround the main island of South Georgia and some remote and isolated islets west and east-southeast of the main island of South Georgia Island.
South Georgia is situated in the South Atlantic Ocean, about 1390 km east-southeast of the Falkland Islands, in 54-55°S, 36-38°W. It has a land area of 3756 km², including satellite islands, but excluding the South Sandwich Islands which form a separate island group.

The South Georgia block is believed to have formed part of the Pacific margin of Gondwana, and the rocks typify the various stages in the evolution of an active plate margin and marine basin.
The igneous rocks in the south and west are remnants of the ancient volcanic arc.
Rock debris produced by very active rock weathering is also found as moraines on the surface of, and at the termini of the island's glaciers and as rockfalls and screes on mountain slopes.

Icebergs in the vicinity of South Georgia may be derived from glaciers on the island, or from the glaciers and ice shelves of the Antarctic continent.

 North Scotia Ridge Overflow Project
The North Scotia Ridge (NSR), between the Falkland Islands and South Georgia, is traversed by much of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC).
It is thought that the SAF passes through a 1700 m gap at 55°W, and that the PF crosses the NSR near Shag Rocks Passage (53°S 48°W).
Shag Rocks Passage, at approximately 3000 m, is by far the deepest.
