Shagrath: You know actually I’m very happy with where we are today; what we have accomplished through the ten years of existence.
Shagrath: Basically, that’s what the Death Cult album is all about, it’s like we’re kind of evolving into new directions with the music while at the same time we try to keep some of our old-school elements, the old-school riffs that we use and that we are known for on the first album.
Shagrath: Ah, not really, I mean I might have a beat in my head that I might like to work with y’know, but there doesn’t seem to be any free time to experiment.

CoC : Dimmu Borgir : Interview
Using the three-word string titles begins to chuckle> -- I'm sure you've been asked this before, but with the last album there was (and I don't know whether it was realised in the band) a certain incongruity with the way that the title ended up sounding, because of the word "puritanical".
Shagrath: Which we did on purpose, because I mean, it's basically too hard for people to pronounce, read and understand the title for the previous one, so we thought it would be better to have a more primitive title this time -- not one that people don't understand.
Shagrath: But I mean, it's hard when we tour with a lot of other bands 'cause they need their space on stage and it's very limited for, basically, what you can do on stage for our stage show.

DIMMU BORGIR Interview by Shan Siva
Shagrath: First of all, what most people may not know is that in the early 90’s there was about 8 people in the so called fl metal ‘scene’ in Norway and no ‘movement’ as such.
Shagrath: We need people who are 110% committed cos sometimes things have to be done at short notice so its more than just a job but a lifestyle so if you don’t enjoy it then you shouldn’t be in it - thats the rule.
Shagrath: Actually, last year we didn’t tour so we had to take part time jobs to pay the bills and thats not easy because Norway is such an expensive country as you know so its hard to keep a professional band going.

In fact, Shagrath is disarmingly blase about the series of events that virtually held Norway hostage at the beginning of the '90s.
The unique combination lent a dark, atmospheric vibe to Dimmu Borgir's music--a sound Shagrath equates with "running through the woods with an axe in your hand." It was also the perfect complement to the band's geographic moniker.
Shagrath himself hasn't actually spent much time there, but as he notes, a lack of experience has never hindered the band creatively.

Shagrath: Dimmu Borgir is quite a unique band in that genre; I mean its fl metal of course, but we have many different elements in our music.

BNR Metal Pages -- Chrome Division   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-01)
Chrome Division was formed by a pair of Dimmu Borgir members (longtime vocalist Shagrath and onetime bassist Nagash) back in 1999, the pair wishing to do something far removed from fl metal.
Nagash eventually left the project (indeed, he also left Dimmu shortly thereafter, going on to man The Kovenant), but Shagrath (here as a guitarist) fleshed out a full band, and eventually an album, Doomsday Rock’n’Roll, was released in 2006.
Not every song is an outright winner, but in general there’s enough simplistic yet effective gruff heavy rock to keep fans of this kind of stuff interested (whether Dimmu fans take to this is another matter).
