Shaheed Minar monument built in memory of the mother language martyrs, who were killed on 21 February 1952 during the language movement.
The foundation stone of the Shaheed Minar was laid for the second time on 21 February 1956 by Abu Hossain Sarkar, the then Chief Minister of East Pakistan, along with Maulana abdul hamid khan bhasani and Hasina Begum, mother of Abul Barkat, the language martyr.
The Shaheed Minar, with all its architectural and sculptural imperfections, still stands as a symbol of the linguistic and nationalistic struggle of Bangladeshis.

In 1972 designs were called for rebuilding the Shaheed Minar (which was destroyed on the night of March 27, 1971 by the Pakistan Army) A competition was held and many people submitted their designs from amongst which Hamidur Rahman’s layout was selected once again.
She is said to have claimed that the actual design of the Minar was hers, and that it was in collaboration with the artist Hamidur Rahman that she came up with the final piece.

On the night of 23 February, the students constructed a shaheed minar (martyrs' memorial) on the spot where the students had been killed.
After liberation, the day became a national holiday and the university of dhaka took over the maintenance of the Shaheed Minar and the surrounding area and the responsibility of organising the commemoration.
