Shahu, a grandson of Shivaji became ruler until his death in 1749.At the time of death he appointed peshwa as head of the state with certain conditions to follow.
Baji Rao's son, Balaji Bajirao (Nanasaheb), was appointed as a Peshwa by Shahu.
The period between 1741 and 1745 was one of comparative calm in the Deccan.

Shahu had been a prisoner for 18 years from 1689 up to 1707.

Under Shahu, the Bhat family of Shrivardhan (Raigad) came to prominence and the Chitpavan Brahman Balaji Vishwanath Bhat (1713-1720), who had helped Shahu to strengthen his position, became his Peshwa (prime minister) and brought in the sanads (deeds) of Swaraj, Chauth and Sardeshmukhi from the Mughals.
Shahu died in 1749 and his adopted son Ramraja, being incompetent, remained a titular Chhatrapati.
The Peshwas thus became the de facto rulers of Maharashtra, and Pune became the centre of Maratha politics.

The fanatic Brahmins of those times had refused to coronate Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and subsequently Rajarshi Shahu Maharaj of Kolhapur since they didn't consider Marathas, as 'Kshatriyas'.
Chhatrapati Shivaji brought Gagabhat of Varanasi to establish his lineage with the Sisodias (Rajputs) of Rajasthan & testify his being Kshatriya, whereas the great social reformer Rajarshi Shahu Maharaj extended the vedic rights to non brahmins and empowered them do the jobs of the brahmins.
Rajarshi Shahu realised the falacy in the caste system and corrected it by bringing all the sections of the society on one platform to fight this brahmin fanatism.

LAHORE - The Director General Lahore Development Authority (LDA) has declared the Garhi Shahu Bridge, built at the cost of Rs.28 million, as unsafe for the general traffic and asked the local traffic police to close it down for the traffic and provide the people alernative route.
The NESPAK, which presided over the construction of Garhi Shahu Bridge some years ago, has recommended to LDA earlier to close the bridge for the traffic.
Sources said that the contractor joint hands with the higher officials concerned had used sub-standard material during the construction of the Garhi Shahu Bridge some seven years ago.
