Shai Hulud — yes, they take their name from Dune-- fused punk, metal, hardcore, and thrash in a way that hadn’t been done before, and the inspired, fevered lyrical delivery attracted rabid fans who had a cult-like worship for the band.
Shai Hulud represented an ethos and an ethic: touring till they wore the tread off the tires, playing expressly for the kids, and having something of note to say in the lyrics.
Shai Hulud were vital, essential and relevant, so much so that Alternative Press did an “oral history” feature on the band, an accolade reserved for bands that have carved out an undeniable place in the hearts of music fans.

Shai Hulud is well-known within the hardcore scene for their often complex compositions and misanthropic lyrics.
The two mainstay members of Shai Hulud are considered to be Matt Fox (guitar), who writes most of the band's musical and lyrical output, and Matt Fletcher (originally guitar, but then moved on to bass), who assists in writing.
Acknowledging some people may misinterpret the parting as the end of Shai Hulud, the band came out on their homepage indicating that they would not be breaking up; instead, the band would change name to The Warmth of Red Blood and continue what had been started with Shai Hulud.

I was asked to join the band after the summer tour of europe in the summer of 1999, and I moved from Oklahoma to join the band in Florida in January of 2000.
I was in a few bands in Oklahoma that recorded some demos and opened for some other bands that came through the area.
I wish more hardcore bands could achieve this kind of success, and we should all be more supportive of the bands who create the music that enhances our lives.

Shai Huluds first of many lineup changes came with the addition of drummer, Steven Lee Kleisath (affectionately known as Bizarro), whose incredibly unique approach to song-writing helped redefine the band his influence remaining even long after he and Shai Hulud parted company.
Shai Hulud toured abroad with only one guitar player (Matt Fox), their original-but-soon-not-to-be bass player, Dave Silber, and a fine drummer named Andrummist Gormley The Whistle Blower who filled in after only knowing the songs for under two weeks.
Whatever the hell the band decides to call itself, we are diligently working on new material, furthering the commitment to release only intelligent and genuinely emotive music in a scene where the banal, contrived, and altogether thoughtless primarily reign supreme.

Shai Hulud has been my favorite hardcore band since the first EP came out, so for the first year I couldn’t believe it and it was like a dream come true.
Not to toot my own horn, but kind of to toot the band’s horn, when you can still see kids coming out, I think you can see Shai Hulud as being one of the influencial bands of the ‘90’s and we will still be in five or ten years from now.

The band left immediately after playing to drive ten hours home to go to work the next day, and then planned to drive back up to Charlotte the next day for their next show.
I didn't recognize a single member of the band as they took the stage, and I'm pretty sure if there were ever a hardcore hall of fame created, it would need a whole wing dedicated to ex-members of Shai Hulud.

The songs of The Hulud - as they are colloquially known - hit the heart and soul, as the music impacts with melodic intensity and raw emotion, while lyrically, social wrongs, personal injustices and the issue of gathering and maintaining strength are dealt with on an intimate and relatable level.
The band was often outspoken on a number of issues, especially when it came to issues about violence.

While it could be argued that Shai Hulud don't necessarily advance the metalcore genre as a whole, there is an elderly statesmen appeal and maturity to their sound that allows them to not have to.
Perhaps this is all a result of the band having to stay humble due to turmoil that derailed them earlier on in their career, perhaps not.
The thing is Shai Hulud are able to capitalize on unhinged ferocity and tension without having to resort to thrash nostalgia, melodic death metal wankery or mascara clad metalcore.

Over the years the former Floridian (now NY based) band has seen more line-up changes than Michael Jackson's face, but luckily has still managed to keep their sound relatively the same.
Case-in-point: New Found Glory guitarist Chad Gilbert was the singer for Shai Hulud on their 1997 debut album Hearts Once Nourished with Hope and Compassion.
I can sit and read their entire liner notes without boredom setting in, and to give you a taste of what I mean, I quote: "If a human's nature is to war, this song is a battleground!", taken from my favorite song, "This Song: For the True and Passionate Lovers of Music".

The band has been around for a long time, considering it was 1999 and people even here in nowheresville Ohio had heard of them.
Shai Hulud’s energy is never called into question even if the recording’s quality may be.
The band is apparently going the way of the buffalo, so aside from buying a complete discography of the band, this is the best way to get a running start into knowing the band.

I've often heard that Shai Hulud was a mathcore or calculus metal band.
Shai Hulud's "That Within Blood Ill-Tempered" is more of a hardcore record given that it lacks The Dillinger Escape Plan's maniacally crafted starts and stops and shards of metallic mayhem in the hardcore form.
Shai Hulud stretch, pull, push, and massage the hardcore genre to the point where a conflagration of influences result in a convergence of stylistic influences wrapped in complex song structures.

Shai Hulud was "The" band that brought out the best musically for me, and i'm sure millions of other fans.
Yeah to some people Shai Hulud was "just a band" but to allot of people bands have the power to change lives, and they did that to me and I am sure some of you.
Shai Hulud I want to thank you from the depth of my soul for being one of the best bands not only in hardcore but in all aggressive music.

Of course, that’s just what kept the band together for so many years--indiscriminate rage against the machine is easy for each member to funnel into their particular area of concern.
They come down more in line with that band that was always sort of there, in case your favorite was in between records or, more accurately in hardcore, in between bands.
As such, I suppose that as a document to the working methods of the band, or as a means to chart their progression from humble poorly recorded basements to humble poorly funded studios, it’s essential listening (not to mention the top-notch and entertaining liner notes).
