Being a Shaivaite is love of Shiva as the ultimate and most Shaivaites NEVER do antimonian practices : Shiva himself was a pure, monogamous Ascetic who did deep meditation.
This is to impress a sense of ego-dissolution and reduction of fear, since fear is a component of avidya, lack of knowledge.
The overwhelming majority of Shaivaites, it can be unequivocally stated, NEVER encourage indulgence in intoxicants.

It is divine, he said, to have the aspect of a Shaivaite, have the name of Hari (Krishna) constantly on one's lips, and have love Ma Kali always in one's heart.
Also, I can attest to the fact that, having lived in India and being in and out of cities like Mumbai and Kolkata all the time, I have met NOT ONE HINDU who discriminates between Shiva and Vishnu to the point at which sectarianism becomes an issue.
It is the height of arrogance to say that they are not real Shaivaites and Vaishnavas, because you will find that the greatest Vaishnavs and Shaivaites, the biggest Kali Tantrics and the most blessed Krishna Bhakti Yogins of all time, lose interest in differentiation and acknowledge all as one.

But by aiming the light of consciousness at itself, out of the wish to unfold itself, brahman becomes a subject; and from then on, all God's further unfolding of Himself is shot through with a personal quality.
Power in Sanskrit is shakti, a feminine noun, so that the sum of all God's capacities for unfolding Himself is interpreted in the myths of the Shaivaites as a great goddess, as Shiva's female partner.
As the above quotes show, Hinduism is an especially good place to proceed with our exploration of different religious views of the Absolute.

Hinduism encourages devotees to describe and develop a personal relationship with their chosen deity (ishta devata) in the form of a God or Goddess.
While some censuses hold worshippers of one form or another of Vishnu (known as Vaishnavites) to be at 80% and those of Shiva (called Shaivaites) and Shakti at the remaining 20%, such figures are perhaps misleading.
The vast majority of Hindus worship many gods as varicolored forms of the same prism of Truth.
