The introductory material and notes for each play will not usually be as extensive as in multi-volume series, but a one-volume Shakespeare often includes the generous introductory essays mentioned in our Beyond Dummyhood page.
The reason to read a play from a multi-volume series is because there are usually fuller notes, answering more of a reader's questions, and lengthier and more probing prefaces and related material.
Its special feature is that the plays and their annotations are printed separately -- providing a beautifully clean version of the text at the front but requiring a finger in the rear pages to access the notes.
