  Shakhbut bin Dhiyab - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Shakbut's father, Dhiyab bin Isa, had sent a hunting party from Liwa in 1761 which tracked a gazelle to a brackish spring on the island.
Dhiyab ordered Shakbut to move to the island in 1793; he did, and built a village and fort there.
He was followed by his son Khalifa bin Shakhbut (ruled 1833-1845).

In 1939, Sheikh Shakhbut bin Dhiyab granted Petroleum concessions, and oil was first found in 1958.
After the Emirates gained independence in 1971, oil wealth continued to flow to the area and traditional mud-brick huts were rapidly replaced with banks, boutiques and modern highrises.
His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahayan is the hereditary emir and ruler of Abu Dhabi, as well as the current president of the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

In 1793, the Ruler of the Bani Yas, Sheikh Shakhbut bin Dhiyab, transferred his headquarters from the Liwa to Abu Dhabi, giving added impetus to the island's development.
Two centuries on, Sheikh Shakhbut's fort remains, much extended and restored, and in use today as the home of the National Archives.
Despite losing its importance as the residence of the Sheikh, life went on in the Liwa without major change for the next 170 years until the first oil revenues began to reach Abu Dhabi in the 1960s.

Sheikh Zayed the Great, grandfather of UAE President Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, was Ruler of Abu Dhabi Emirate from 1855 to 1909, the longest reign in the Emirate's history.
Son of Sheikh Khalifa bin Shakhbut (ruled 1833-1845) and grandson of Sheikh Shakhbut bin Dhiyab (ruled 1798 to 1816), Sheikh Zayed the Great led Abu Dhabi to a position of pre-eminence throughout south-eastern Arabia, with his political influence stretching deep into what is now the Sultanate of Oman and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
He was succeeded on the throne by several sons, among whom was Sheikh Sultan bin Zayed (ruled 1922-1926), the father of President Sheikh Zayed.

It was from the Liwa that Sheikh Dhiyab bin Isa sent out a hunting party in 1761 to the island territory on the Arabian Gulf.
The party returned to the Liwa to tell Sheikh Dhiyab of their discovery, who decreed that the island should be named as Abu Dhabi - Arabic for The Father of the Gazelle.
Some time after the historical event of naming Abu Dhabi, Sheikh Dhiyab directed his son Sheikh Shakhbut bin Dhiyab to move to the island (1793).
