Shakti (meaning creative intelligence) is an acoustic music group widely considered to be the pioneers in fusing the music of the East and West.
The group was formed by the legendary British guitar player [[John McLaughlin and Indian violin player L.Shankar at Wesleyan University, Connecticut in the early 1970s where McLaughlin was studying the vina (an Indian stringed instrument).
Shakti recorded just three albums between 1975 and 1979 and produced some daring, exuberant and technically brilliant music combining odd rhythmic meters with intense melody.

Shakti, which explored world music long before it was either catchphrase or marketing tool, served up acoustic pyrotechnics that were the visceral equal of McLaughlin's previous group, jazz-rock fusion pioneers Mahavishnu Orchestra.
Shakti recorded the concerts on DAT as personal souvenirs, but the results were so spectacular that McLaughlin's label, Verve, released a whole evening's performance as a double CD in 1999.
Shakti's roots were in McLaughlin's 1970 solo album, "My Goal's Beyond," which included several jams with Indian musicians and reflected the musician's interest not only in Indian music but in Indian philosophy and religion.

 John McLaughlin
The band recorded three highly-regarded albums before personality clashes brought things to an end in 1973; a new line-up appeared in 1974 but then dissolved in 1975.
After the dissolution of Mahavishnu Orchestra, McLaughlin put together the acoustic band Shakti, one of the first practitioners of what has since come to be referred to as "world music".
In the years since the break-up of Shakti, McLaughlin has moved between electric and acoustic settings, briefly reforming Mahavishnu in 1984 and touring in the 90s with an acoustic jazz trio.

For many years, the dub poet and dancer from Senegal, Bourama Badji, was a partner of the band and they recorded five records together and made several concerts tours throughout whole Europe.
When recording CD`s in the past, the band cooperated with producers like Louis Beckett (Asian Dub Foundation, African Headcharge) and later with Kiron J., who is well known in the London technoscene.

The band featured Mclaughlin on acoustic guitar, Zakir Hussain on tabla, timbales, bongos, Naal, Dholak, triangles, vocals, T.H. Vinayakram on Ghatam, Mridangam, Kanjeera, Moorsing, vocals, Shankar on violin, viola, vocals, and R. Raghvan on Mridangam.
Shakti drew on many traditions for it's music: North and South Indian classical music, jazz, folk, and contemporary music.

With all due respect to the very fine group Oregon, Shakti was really the first band to truly capture the essence of what we now call ”World Music.” Shakti's dependence on Eastern musical models infused with Western jazz-like improvisation made for an exciting and influential stew.
How ironic that 20 years later, a band different from the original Shakti but born from its spirit should emerge to find commercial success.
Remember Shakti is the name of the new group as well as its first live album.

In the service of those seminal fusion bands, the British guitarist combined raw, over-the-top abandon with a focused intensity and searching quality that suggested a link between the tumultuous jams of Jimi Hendrix and the spiritually heightened flights of latter-day John Coltrane.
By fusing north and south Indian classical music and Western improvisation (i.e., jazz), the band was, in essence, finding common ground between the lengthy ragas of Ravi Shankar and the extended modal improvisations of John Coltrane.
Placing the acoustic guitar in the midst of an electric band setting, particularly with a drummer as potent as Campbell, was a risky undertaking for McLaughlin and proved to be problematic in live situations.
